China: Scientists have identified the first surface rupture from the 22 October magnitude 7.0 Baqên earthquake in Tibet, about 15 km east of the epicentre.
The fault produced around 3.5 metres of vertical displacement, with up to 0.9 metres of left-lateral movement locally.
Investigators also found sand liquefaction and ground fissures. The earthquake was caused primarily by normal faulting as the crust stretched.

Simulation inaccurately shows a lake already present before the debris arrives. Nepali officials say an ice-rock avalanche blocked the Lhende Khola on 26 Aug, forming a temporary debris dam and lake that then burst. No pre-existing lake at the site has been confirmed.

New thermochronology research on the Shan Plateau, SE Tibet: Apatite & zircon (U-Th)/He data reveal rapid exhumation starting around 10 million years ago, driven by left-lateral faulting. Combined with tomographic and regional deformation evidence, Jingxing Yu and colleagues argue that limited ~60-km lithospheric extrusion around the Eastern Himalayan Syntaxis has sustained the plateau’s clockwise rotation under its modern tectonic framework since the late Miocene. Fascinating clues to Tibetan Plateau growth geodynamics! Read the new #Geology article at doi.org/10.1130/G54757.1 #Tibet #Tectonics #Geodynamics #GSAPubs Image: Fig. 4 from the paper.

The August issue of GSA Today features new research on active tectonics, reflections on international scientific collaboration, and a look back at one of geology's most iconic field sites.
• Explore new research introducing an active fault database for the northern Western Branch of the East African Rift System, providing new insights into continental rifting, earthquake hazards, and the processes driving the breakup of continents.
• Follow Kathleen Benison's journey as a GSA Thompson Distinguished International Lecturer, and discover how teaching, learning, and building friendships through geoscience can create lasting international connections.
• Celebrate the legacy of James Hutton and Siccar Point, where observations made three centuries ago helped lay the foundation for modern geology and our understanding of deep time.
