Can you believe protest happening in a city of our country to protect the right to read books? Imagine where are we heading towards.
Hundreds of people walked holding books in their hands at a rally in Kolkata on Saturday (October 31) protest against recent attacks on books and bookstalls, blamed on right-wing groups and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The march, “Walk for books”, was conducted without any political banners, with common citizens, activists, professors, and politicians taking part in it.

If posting on ao3 was supposed to be like choosing the life of a nun, we wouldn't have the option to filter by kudos and bookmarks. The fact that it exists means that interactions matter. You don't want someone to pat your back. Fair.

My hot(?) take is that the same fandom norms and etiquette on reposting fanart, should apply to fanfic.
This is regardless of how permissive individual writers are about their fic, just like how the norms exist regardless of how permissive individual artists are about their art.
I hope sooner or later they realize that they are making the same arguments AI companies do when scrapping data to train LLMs.

For those of you fighting writers who keep asking for their work to not be thrown around like candy…this is directly from AO3’s T&Cs.
tldr: if you don’t have direct permission, then you Don’t Have Permission.
People understand unpaid labour= bad.
Sharing art without consent= theft
But when it comes to writers, they suddenly forget that concept. Fic writer on ao3 are not even asking for your money. Sharing work created by people without asking for consent sounds really terrible.
People understand respecting fanartists and not reporting/sharing/tracing their art without permission. But evetrytime would crucify writers for expecting attention of their about.
This! I see fan artists all the time get mad over someone sharing/using their art without credit. But the moment writers get uncomfortable with it, everyone would side with the ones sharing work without consent and credit.
