The two most important responsibilities of a father to his children: Show them what God is like and love their mother.

Near the end of Cormac McCarthy's book The Road, a dying father speaks to his son for the last time. You have to carry the fire. I don’t know how to. Yes you do. Is it real? The fire? Yes it is. Where is it? I dont know where it is. Yes you do. It's inside you. It was always there. I can see it. The world in that book has nothing left for the man to hand down. No house and no inheritance. All the father has to give is what he has guarded the whole way on the road, and that is courage and the refusal to be cruel when cruelty might be easier. Notice what he doesn’t say. He doesn’t say, "Take my fire." He says, "It was always there. I can see it." That’s the last work of a father. Not just to pour something into a boy, but to also see what is already in him and trust him to carry it forward. Our sons probably won’t remember most of what we buy them. They will remember whether we believed in them and if we kept our light when the days were dark. In this often dark world, carry the fire and then help someone else find theirs. The best thing we leave behind is not always in our hands. It’s also in the people we helped to see the light.

Walked into a store today and heard the radio station say, "You're listening to classic hits on Vinyl Gold." This was followed immediately by the station playing Linkin Park.

A devotion on agonizing elections and the reign of Jesus Christ: Psalm 110 Whenever elections go poorly in our minds, it’s a common thing for Christians to turn to these words from Psalm 110, these words about Jesus Christ, the Son of David, sitting at the right hand of the Father with His enemies as His footstool. In moments of political terror, we like to remind ourselves not to trust in earthly kings but to trust only the King of Kings. This is good, right, and salutary, of course. As long as we mean the right thing by it. We shouldn’t mean, “look, God’s still in charge and He’ll take care of us and we’ll all be fine.” We shouldn’t cite these words to make an appeal to political moderacy. Certainly, we all have a tendency to overvalue how dire the stakes are in the moment, but, at the same time, well, sometimes things are dire. Those who refuse to protect the lives of the unborn are inviting God to pour out His wrath upon them. Those who refuse to see the unique threat that Islam has always posed and still poses to the Christian world are inviting bloodshed and chaos into their neighborhoods. And many faithful Christians before you trusted that Christ was on His throne and still were caught up in the earthly chastisement of God or the evil He permitted to fall on them. So while it’s far more likely that those screaming about worst case scenarios are being hysterical than prophetic, it’s still true that Christ being on His throne is not a promise that our earthly kingdoms won’t be torn apart by civil war or nuclear weapons or a thousand other horrors. Rather, when we confess that Christ is on His throne and that His enemies are under His feet, we are confessing that there is no cell of your flesh that is under the power of the devil, which means that there is not a cell of your flesh that can be lost to bombs or bullets or bayonettes or the jaws of the wolf. We are confessing that, even if your neighbors vote to tear you limb from limb, your limbs don’t belong to them. They belong to Jesus, who will claim those limbs as His own and clothe them in His sin-killing glory on the last day. Christ being on His throne means that, when we in our political foolishness have torn the world apart, our Lord will forgive our evil, lift us out of the muck of our own making, and welcome us into His embrace. Christ being on His throne means that our greatest moments of political glory will not compare to the heavenly glory we witness when He casts Satan into the pit and welcomes us into His embrace, just as it means that our deepest political despair, no matter how bloody, will not survive the moment the One who bled for us calls us out of the grave and into His glorious Kingdom. Maybe things are not as bad as you think. Maybe they’re unfathomably worse. And maybe every earthly victory you’re boasting of today will be ripped out of your heart by tomorrow. No man knows. But God knows you. The Son He sent to make you know Him now sits on His throne. And in His own time, He will destroy everything that tore you up but could not tear you away from Him.

You don’t know what comes next. You don’t know how to fix what is shattered. Jesus knows it all. He will lead you through every fire and you will not be consumed.

"There is a greater effort now being made to please the ear than to reach the heart, and bring men to the foot of the cross. The sword of the Spirit being muffled with silken wreaths cannot penetrate the coat of mail with which sinners are clad." - Abner Chase, 1846

If you're a Christian leader who's had an affair, it's ok to go sell insurance. Or build houses. Or drive Uber. You should repent and be fully restored to community within the life of the church. But you don't have to get back on stage. You don't need to teach. If can't serve without being in the spotlight, maybe you weren't really serving in the first place.

Today is as good a day as any to remember that evil does not begin in political agendas, religious heresies, international conflicts, or terrorist organizations. It always begins in the same place: the human heart. It's also as good a day as any to remember that good does not begin in moral effort, self-sacrifice, religious performance, or social programs. It always begins in the same place: the heart of God. That heart of God, on cosmic display atop the cross, is the ultimate answer to every evil in the world.

I am struck again, any time I remember 9/11, by how many ordinary Americans showed an almost mythological level of heroism to save their fellow citizens. I'm not sure how someone can't feel a sense of patriotism when you read their stories.

If you are so inclined, here are some ways you could pray for the Global Methodist general conference to be held in Johannesburg next week: 1That God’s will for the church will prevail above all else 2That we will not take up the weapons of church politics against one another 3That we will honor God in our speech and conduct 4That we will outdo one another in showing honor 5That we will lay down our agendas in submission to the will of God 6That delegates will travel safely to and from the conference 7That those presiding will do so with clarity and wisdom 8That those leading us in worship will be guided by the Holy Spirit 9That we will elect bishops who will guide the church into holiness and doctrinal integrity 10That we will leave with a sense of unity
