Undergraduate babe btw, sometimes I wonder whether some of you understand the weight of meeting even the most basic needs, from putting food on the table to taking care of those little miscellaneous expenses that come with being a student. A few years before I left Nigeria, I met a young lady who was in her final year. At the time, I saw a future with her. I thought to myself, perhaps this is someone I could marry someday, someone I could grow with and build a life alongside. She opened up to me about her struggles, the difficulties at home, her parents' financial situation and the weight of trying to survive as a student. There was no pretence, no attempt to appear sophisticated or impress me. She was simply being honest about her circumstances, and I appreciated that. But what I found rather disturbing was her interpretation of my kindness. Whenever I sent her money for feeding or helped with one little school expense or another, she would turn around and describe me as a MAGA, as though my willingness to support her meant I was foolish enough to be exploited. And it didn't end with me. She extended the same narrative to her friends; Imagine going all the way to someone's hostel to spend time with her, sometimes carrying provisions along because you genuinely wanted to make life a little easier for her, only to discover that she had been telling her friends that you were nothing but a MUGU Honestly, that was an eye-opener. It wasn't the money that bothered me; it was the sheer disrespect for the intention behind it. There is a difference between taking advantage of someone's generosity and appreciating someone who genuinely wants to make your burden a little lighter. Sometimes, I wonder whether some undergraduate ladies truly understand the difference between being supported and being played.
