Nothing says a country's not a dictatorship like having to issue grovelling apologies for mentioning that it was in the past.

I used to be a spiteful, belligerent and unreflective member of one political tribe, but thankfully I've grown and matured and I'm a spiteful, belligerent and unreflective member of another political tribe.

Something I've been wondering about lately is why with all the money Europe has poured into left-wing Israeli NGOs (Jewish and Arab) to try to move Israeli politics to the left, it doesn't seem to have invested a penny in nurturing a liberal democratic Palestinian movement to create a viable alternative to Fatah, Hamas, and Islamic Jihad, the latter two of which have no interest in peace, and the former of which is to corrupt and dictatorial to be able and willing to make peace.
Israel is not why Palestinians have little to no interest in doing the institution building required to not be a failed state. You’d have an even crappier version of Lebanon with a population that 3/4 supports Palestinian Hezbollah antics instead of 1/3. The Israeli attitudes on this are a response to what is clearly true about the Palestinians. You can’t get the Israelis to back off without fixing the dumpster fires that are Palestinian Nationalism, Palestinian politics, and Palestinian institutions.

Btw, if you're wondering what it would look like if antisemites' notions of Jewish/Israeli influence and control were remotely true, look at what's happening with Mbappe and China.

I'm not Israeli, but if I lived on a tiny strip of land surrounded by genocidal Muslims, yet managed to win all the wars, become one of the richest countries per capita in the world, and a hub of technology, science, and innovation, I'd be pretty damn proud.
I’ve always wondered how Israelis could have any trace of national pride when their country is so parasitically dependent on another country. Thoughts?

What's the point of being worth 250 million and an internationally adored superstar if you still have to debase yourself like this? What's the worst that could happen to Mbappe if he said "I'll apologize if Xi Jinping personally sucks my dick in a Sexy Chairman Mao costume?"

Mao Zedong is under any single social metric a dictator. Not a single popular election, single government party and lifetime leadership. Not even taking into account the millions of deaths under his reign. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mao_Zedong

Would he have to pay like a 10 million € fine to La Liga? How would that impact his quality of life in any way?

8am: Israel's vote is the "last chance" before becoming a pariah state. 9am: Syria banning women from university courses is "a bad omen." One country is running a free election, the other is closing classrooms to women. Guess which one gets called a pariah.
Israel's vote today is "the last chance to preserve democracy and pull Israel back from the brink of becoming a pariah state under international sanctions." trib.al/boGxIVQ

For those who claim that criticising *Israel* is somehow “forbidden”, this is the President of La Liga making a grovelling apology to China because one of the League’s players made an offhand remark calling Mao a dictator (which is true!)

Understand how the narrative works. Ahead of Brazil’s election, they were gearing up to blame Meta if Lula lost. Now that he’s been declared the winner, we’re hearing about the brilliant use of WhatsApp (Meta) that helped deliver his victory. When Obama won in 2012, they celebrated his shrewd use of Facebook, voter data and microtargeting. When Brexit happened and Trump won in 2016, we got the Cambridge Analytica moral panic. When the left wins, it’s brilliant digital campaigning. When the right wins, it’s social media manipulation undermining democracy.

This is obviously staggeringly ignorant but it's also downstream of a society where the word Zionist is increasingly used as an antisemitic placeholder for "bad Jews".
Googled him, saw he was leading a centrist party, then saw it was labelled as "Liberal Zionist" and that his son was killed in Gaza. Israel continues to be fucked.

What I find funny about this meme is how it escaped containment. The actual image lacks the context needed for the punchline. People just KNOW he did it, without having the slightest idea of what "it" is or how hot dogs are involved.

Walzer was a last holdout on the social democratic left who was willing to make it possible for the West to fight its enemies without being completely hamstrung by ethical and legal rules that essentially allow the enemy to win so long as defeating them harms "too many" civilians. Even if one believed this saved civilians in the short-run, in the long-run it leads to the end of civilized society, as civilized countries can't fight, but barbarians, who don't care about any moral or legal rules, aren't constrained at all.

I don't like Ben Gvir or Smotrich. But they are moderates compared to your average Palestinian man walking in the streets of Gaza. They are not the obstacle to peace.
The anti Ben Gvir and Smotrich talking point is very common in the West under the theory that Israel would be embraced again if only the Israeli Right wing was sidelined. But that love would last only a few minutes, if that long. The post October 7th reality is nearly ALL Israelis want leaders to stand strong against the threats that surround them and not make concessions that will endanger their security. Half the country may hate Bibi, but they frankly wouldn't change most of his military policies. Naive thinking gave away Gaza and didn't see the ongoing threat of the Iranian backed militarized enemies in Israel's north and south. Going back to that place is suicidal, even if you think a few more members of Congress will then be less hostile to Israel. Electing an Israeli Left wing government may feel good for some Americans, but it will never be enough to appease the growing hatred for Israel in the minds of college students and the media, poisoned by a decades long Qatari funded hate campaign. I would love it if Israeli politicians were always diplomatic, but sometimes they have to be brutally honest. It may hurt our ears, but we don't suffer the same consequences that they do. Israeli voters don't have the luxury of being wrong again about those who are determined to destroy their country and the Jews who live there. Picking olives is easy. Protecting Jews is much harder. If we truly support the only democracy in the Middle East, we should let them elect their own government, and not pretend that these two guys are the real obstacle to peace, love and harmony.

As a non-American, I had a completely wrong image of The Cheesecake Factory aesthetics; from the name, I expected it to look like a classic diner, clean-cut, bright and functional.
