Introducing 30 days of shoulder health. For the next 30 days (weekdays only), I’m going to share one observation per day from the frontlines of shoulder health. I have the privilege of running a rehab clinic, specializing in shoulder rehab, where patients have experienced the effectiveness of progressive rehab, where I’ve seen the biggest challenges they face post-surgery, and have developed deep transformations with patients of all athletic backgrounds (novice, advanced, experienced, retired) and sports (baseball, bodybuilding, CrossFit, oly, and most recently Hyrox), I get to help hundreds of patients a year, and I want to bring that help to those tired of cookie cutter programs and oversold claims who want a solution to shoulder health. There’s just one rule: 1) Each day is actionable & understandable. First post coming later.

Pretty much the main reason posture matters. Otherwise it has a very poor link with back/neck pain. Improve your posture to make yourself hotter (thanks @rachcorrine) and to be more confident in yourself. There are studies that a tall “proper” posture is linked with how confident a person is. For back/neck pain — simply move often, move your joints and muscles and delegate your stress.
Good posture is an easy fix to make yourself hotter. Some things I think about when walking: - Stand up straight shoulders back (you deserve to be here) - Focus on breath (nose breathing, no mouth breathing) - Imagine a string is coming out of your belly button and literally pulling you forward (this engages core) - Feel the way your legs move, the way your thighs touch, the way your hips sway (this keeps you present, magnetic, and in your body)

I wish this was a joke. But it’s sadly true. I’ve already had six cheerleader with pars fractures who were diagnosed, by their pcp, with back pain from tights hamstrings. They were told to stretch. It made it worse.
I keep thinking about the 14yo gymnast patient I had who was Dx with a hamstring strain by their PCP/NP. Except the clinical exam showed: Spinal hyperextension MOI 4+/5 HS strength (+) Crossed SLR Test (+) Prone Press Up Like textbook. PT is primary care for MSK injuries.

Sat yesterday. Bedside. With a wife. Married 56 years to a tough as nails old guy. A fighter. But clearly losing his last match. Bad heart. Bad infection. Kidneys failed. Breathing for him. She understood he fought and was losing anyway. She sobbed as she went through her ambivalence with me. She didn’t want to let go. She didn’t want him to suffer. He’d be so mad if he knew all of the agressive things we were doing to him. Make him comfortable. Let him go HOME. She had no one to sit the watch with her. So I did. Held her while she sobbed and watch the light in her person go back to the source. It didn’t take long. Delayed me by a bit of time but I think it was the MOST important thing I did all day. I’ve long since learned very directly my limitations on life and death in my job. I know I won’t win every case, even if I always want to. And when the case is lost … The only thing left for the heart of the healer is to sit with the pain of those that love and remain and carry on. There is value there. It’s a simple thing, really. When hope is gone, all that is left is love.

The longer you postpone starting. The longer it will take to finish. On average clients dealing with shoulder issues for over 6 weeks, experience improvements in symptoms by week 4 of their program. Sometimes sooner. Comment LOAD and I’ll send you what a week in your program can look like.

Controversial take: It's a great position to not care about the results of any election because you know you'll win regardless. No stress, no outrage, just locked in. Bet on yourself always...external things can change like the wind.

100 new faces here this past week Welcome. I'm a sports chiropractor, rehab coach and former strength and conditioning professional with a passion for human performance and maintaining independence as I get older. I spend my days helping people keep their neck, shoulder and back healthy and strong for the long haul, teach them how to manage painful days and keep showing up for themselves. Over the last 7.5 years I’ve helped over 500 patients overcome pain, learn how to get strong, and build a resilient body. Now, I also teach clinicians how to do the same in their practice. So let's get more acquainted. Ask Me Anything in the comments. I'll answer them this week.

If you are feeling (rightly) dismayed tonight realize that this is why other things outside of politics are important (too). Make things, create things, have families, write down your life, engage with the eternal, study your religion, hike, travel, grow, embrace the world, let your mind wonder about other things more often, grow things which are less temporal. There is life outside of politics.

What a massacre was last night. Two points of observation: 1) republicans don’t show up when they feel betrayed. 2) democrats vote blue just to vote blue.
America does not belong to those who hate it. America belongs to those who love it.

After two weeks of not being able to train. It was nice getting back under a barbell last night. One thing I’ve noticed these past two weeks… the longer I don’t train, the more my joints begin to ache on simple tasks.

Ah the joys of day time savings. Everyone missed the memo in this house except the wife. So technically the baby woke up at 6... but in reality it was 5am. It's going to be a LONG day.

Deadhangs aren’t magic for shoulders. Some people would like you to believe they are. But they are not the magic exercise for everything wrong with your shoulder. A lot of lifters do them wondering when their shoulder will finally stop hurting. They can have a place in a program later, but in most cases shoulders need strength, range and capacity before they can be hung from.

Simple guide for choosing colors that go together this season: - Start with a neutral. Navy, cream, grey, denim, olive, and brown are easy foundations to build around. - Add one “interesting” color. Burgundy, powder blue, rust, butter yellow, or forest green. - Play with light and dark. (Contrast is king! The eye seeks contrast.) Think: Chocolate brown with baby blue. Burgundy with cream. Navy with camel. Again. No hard “rules” on this. Just a starting point for you.
