"Free Markets and Firepower" - my new Substack

Joined October 2009
Tim Starr is an autodidact writer and independent thinker exploring the deep interplay between **economic liberty** and **military defense**. Through his Substack, *Free Markets and Firepower*, he examines how free markets generate prosperity while credible firepower secures the conditions for liberty to thrive—rejecting both naive pacifism and unchecked statism. His essays blend rigorous historical analysis, counterfactual reasoning, and libertarian principles, tackling topics like the true drivers of the Industrial Revolution, WWII logistics and American power, the role of public goods in a free society, critiques of influential libertarian theorists, and the necessity of strategic strength in an imperfect world. On X (@timstarr2001), Tim delivers sharp, no-holds-barred commentary on foreign policy, individual rights, historical myths, and current events—always grounded in incentives, evidence, and a clear-eyed defense of freedom against ideological capture or folly. A long-time observer of ideas and power, he values systems that align incentives with reality: markets for creation, resolve for protection. Follow him for thoughtful takes that treat liberty as a practical achievement, not a slogan.

The worst thing about American interventionism is knowing that if the US hadn’t intervened, nobody else would. The world would’ve remained peaceful & stable. The Ottomans, Russia, China, Iran, the Islamic empires, Imperial Japan, Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany were deeply committed to minding their own fucking business.

"So-called Holocaust" When people tell you who they are, believe them.
Dr. Hans-Hermann Hoppe criticizes any comparison between Gaza and the Holocaust, citing the lack of forensic evidence and the nature of the Nuremberg trials in contrast to the videos of Israeli criminality. “Nothing like this happened in WWI. Nothing like this happened in WWII.”

Joseph Goebbels was an outright economic Marxist who deviously cloaked his Marxism with Germanic ethnocentrism. He called for a "class struggle" and said "once we have taken over the state, Germany will become a state of labor, a workers’ state." He yearned for a "labor state" (no different than the one in Soviet Russia) and linked his anti-Semitism to his anti-capitalism, saying the two "go together": "As socialists we are opponents of the Jews because we see in the Hebrews the incarnation of capitalism, of the misuse of the nation’s goods." He wanted to alleviate Jews of their capital so that he could socialize it and use it for German state projects. But he was also against non-Jewish capitalists so the "Jewish" thing was a foil for his generic hostility to business owners and "capital" like any Marxist. Since his anti-Jewish stance was schizophrenic and shapeshifting, he also attacked them on the grounds that they led Marxism even though he was a closeted Marxist who echoed Marxist rhetoric about capitalism. In his 1939 screed against England, he framed the war with England as a war between capitalism (England) and socialism (Germany): "England is a capitalist democracy. Germany is a socialist people’s state. And it is not the case that we think England is the richest land on earth. There are lords and City men in England who are in fact the richest men on earth. The broad masses, however, see little of this wealth." He gave away the game in a 1925 speech in a beer hall, in which he declared Lenin the "greatest man" next to Hitler and argued there were only "slight differences" between Communism and Hitlerism.

Ken Paxton sued and made this happen. Need another great reason to vote for @KenPaxtonTX ? This is one for the record books! Liberal Democrats hate Ken for suing Texas Children’s Hospital, and forcing them to obey our State law. This is the SAME state law that Talarfreako voted against which bans childhood mutilation and castration in Texas. Shame on anyone who votes for James Talarico. He is a radical liberal who believes in mutilating children and claims to be a Christian- a preacher at that! Talarico is a total heretic. We must get Republicans in Texas to the polls for Ken! Please do whatever you can (legally) to help Paxton defeat Talafreako.
🚨Today, Texas Children’s Hospital has officially launched their Detransition Clinic 🚨 Under the settlement, TCH must provide multidisciplinary detransition-related care FREE OF CHARGE for five years, including endocrinology, surgery, primary care, fertility counseling, mental health services, social work, and speech pathology. I extend my heartfelt gratitude once again to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and my attorneys at the Burke Law Group for their extraordinary dedication, sacrifice, and tireless efforts throughout this fight. Their commitment helped turn a painful and difficult chapter into an opportunity for meaningful change. @KenPaxtonTX @BurkeLawTweets I think of all the detransitioners who have suffered in silence, been dismissed, and fought desperately to have their voices heard. This win is for them. I hope TCH’s admirable effort to fund and launch Americas first detransition clinic becomes a turning point for the entire country. That this clinic is not the exception, but the first of many. Today’s a good day. ❤️ Link⬇️

Libertarians, take note. The guy is walking right up to the line and maybe even crossing over it into Holocaust Denial. Which lines up with what failed Libertarian Party candidate Michael Recentwald has said about Hoppe: that he's "one of us," that he "knows" the Holocaust didn't happen.

Oh look, the guy who cites David Irving positively believes the same crap as Irving believes. I am bewildered, astonished, flabbergasted, astounded, dumbfounded, thunderstruck, stupefied, gobsmacked, blindsided, staggered, shaken to my core, and utterly overwhelmed by the complete and total absence of anything even remotely resembling surprise. Please, never surprise me like this ever again. I dont think I could handle it.

Rothbard had a lot of great takes. Unfortunately, he suffered what many today also suffer in their analyses: a lack of privity to the topics discussed. Eventually, if you keep trying to write on topics you don't do the deep dive on with robust, first-hand rigor, you fall prey to the trap of having your ideas being laundered from others. This is the breaking point between deontological moral and economic reasoning and being a nuanced historian on a diverse set of topics. It is also why I prefer to be conservative on topics I lack the experience on and prefer to look at those who are doing the ground work with direct evidence reporting via direct documentation. Rothbard's polymath abilities still had limits - and the more he drifted into what he was not actually an expert on by direct experience, the more his takes became a muddled mix of historical revisionism built on incomplete narratives (often, ideologically driven rather than empirically driven on empirical topics).

Rothbard blamed Britain for getting us into WWI & WWII, then blamed Israel for getting us into wars in the Middle East after the Israeli War of Independence. He literally said that in every war of the 20th century America and Britain were in the wrong, or more wrong, than any of our enemies. He blamed Israel for the Six Day War. And, of course, he blamed us for the Cold War, too. Rothbard blamed us (America & Britain) for WWI, WWII, the Cold War, the Korean War, Vietnam War, the Falklands War, the IRA's campaign against the UK, etc. Of course, Germany started WWI, WWII (with Japan), Stalin started the Cold War, the Communists (North Korea, Soviets, & Red China) started the Korean War & the Vietnam War (North Vietnam instead of North Korea), Argentina started the Falklands War, the IRA (with Soviet backing) started the Troubles, etc. He blamed Britain for Germany's invasion of Poland, and even blamed Finland for its invasion by the Soviets. Rothbard made DARVO (Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender) his only method of foreign policy analysis. He had a perfect record of claiming the exact opposite of the truth in these matters. There isn't a totalitarian regime whose propaganda he wasn't willing to parrot approvingly on this, whether it be Hitler's, Stalin's, Kim Il-Sung's, Ho Chi Minh's, Nasser's, the Junta's, etc. I've never seen any Rothbardian make the argument you cite about American economic might making us secure enough to withdraw from the rest of the world. Instead, his followers adhere with absolute loyalty to his demented foreign policy positions.

"Selfless" Hilary: * Best cattle-futures trader ever * Net worth before Bill's election: $700K (w/ Bill) * Net worth now: $120 million * Whitewater: African-Americans defrauded out of their life savings on a real estate deal, Webster Hubbell (Chelsea's biological father) jailed - Hilary skated * Loral deal to sell satellite tech to China that enabled China to make guided missiles - Hilary skated * FBI banned from using foreign intel to detect crimes, to protect Clintons' illegal re-election fund-raising from China, several Clinton associated convicted - Hilary skated. US blinded to intel needed to detect and prevent 9/11 attacks. * Hilary approved sale of Uranium One to Russia, after granting Putin a "reset" after Putin's invasion of Georgia * Hilary approved high-tech transfer to Moscow to build Skolkovo, copying Silicon Valley

The US government allowing Muslim Brotherhood/Hamas student chapters on college campuses across the country for decades was tantamount to the US government allowing Nazi student chapters on college campuses across the country for decades. I mean, what did you think was going to happen?

The search for answers continues....

Even the Constitution of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV) includes a right to private property in housing, as a legacy from the French colonial period. Even a Communist regime supports private property, unlike this fool:
“What a load of crap that one too!!! Jean-Luc Mélenchon advocates for the abolition of private property rights and the requisition of housing: "The right to property is no longer tolerable!" "You will own nothing and you will be happy" JLM's assets = 1.36 M€ (minimum) “ All new and Israel haters like this candidate in France sound like this.

In 1944, an 18 year old American Marine walked into Japanese territory almost entirely alone. He was just 5 feet 4 inches tall, spoke imperfect Japanese, and carried a weapon the enemy never expected: the language he'd learned growing up in Los Angeles. On one extraordinary day, he persuaded roughly 800 Japanese to surrender. This is the story of Guy Gabaldon.. 🧵1/5
