OK, Twitter. I stayed here for Ukraine content, to subvert Elmo. However, I can't in good conscience continue to support Elmo's business with even my tiny bit of content. This will be my last post, here. I'm the same handle on BlueSky: @ udarnik.bsky.social

Today marks 20 years since Novaya Gazeta journalist Anna Politkovskaya was murdered in Moscow. She recognized Putin's true nature earlier than most—and the regime could never erase the truth she died to tell.

This is fucking embarrassing. “America’s best minds”? Where are the people who understand combat, logistics, and the human cost of war? Our troops deserve serious leadership, not another celebrity panel. @SecWar

JFC, I have raely heard more empty buzzwords per second of speech than in this audible word salad.
An unelected American 🇺🇸 with no diplomatic experience is telling me to surrender my home, and telling Ukraine 🇺🇦 to surrender even more land, to an imperialist, fascist dictator committing acts of terrorism every day. I never thought I’d see the day, but here we are, Jared Kushner, negotiating away somebody else’s country.

A russian asked a very dumb question on Threads: When the SMO ends, how many years do you think it will take us to be able to travel to Ukraine as regular tourists? An Ukrainian replied: To come - yes, you will be able to do so, but come back from here - no way. You'll meet a woman on the platform who buried her husband. A taxi driver who was wounded, a saleswoman whose son has gone missing... In short, the policeman who'll be looking for you also has combat experience... He won't find you.

You have noticed it. ChatGPT feels dumber than it used to. Your prompts that worked six months ago produce worse results now. The writing sounds flatter. The ideas sound safer. The internet itself feels like it is shrinking. Every article reads the same. Every email sounds the same. Every answer sounds like it was written by the same voice. You thought it was you. It is not you. Researchers at Oxford and Cambridge published a paper in Nature proving what is happening. They call it Model Collapse. Here is the mechanism in one sentence. AI trained on AI-generated data gets dumber every generation until it forgets what real human data looked like. The internet is filling with AI-generated content. Blog posts. Articles. Reviews. Comments. Social media. AI companies scrape the internet to train the next generation of models. Which means the next generation of AI is being trained on the output of the current generation. Each cycle loses information. Not randomly. It loses the rarest, most unusual, most creative parts first. The researchers call these the "tails of the distribution." The weird ideas. The unexpected perspectives. The things that made the internet feel human. Those disappear first. What remains is the average. The safe. The expected. The bland. Then the next generation trains on that. And loses more. And the next generation trains on that. And loses more. The researchers proved this is not a slow decline. Major degradation happens within just a few iterations. Even when some of the original human data is preserved. They tested it on large language models. On image generators. On statistical models. The pattern was the same every time. The output converges toward a narrow, flattened version of reality that looks nothing like the original data. The lead researcher put it plainly. "Large language models are like fire. A useful tool. But one that pollutes the environment." The pollution is invisible. You cannot see which sentence on the internet was written by a human and which was written by AI. Neither can the AI that is about to train on it. And once the tails are gone, they do not come back. The damage is irreversible. This is not a prediction anymore. It is a diagnosis. The internet you grew up on was built by humans writing things no algorithm would have written. Strange, personal, imperfect, alive. That internet is being diluted. One generation of AI at a time. And the models trained on what remains are learning a smaller and smaller version of the world. Model Collapse is not a technical problem. It is a cultural one. The thing that made the internet worth reading is the thing that disappears first.

This is the most perfectly uncanny piece of AI-assisted writing I've seen--and a great tutorial on how to identify AI text. The OP is a captain! But the tell for AI isn't rhythm, wording, or fact errors. It’s that problems with *all these elements* exist equally & at once. (1/7)

The Cato Institute is a libertarian think tank. It just published a 30-year study showing immigrants paid 14.5 trillion dollars more in taxes than they received in government benefits. Every single year. For thirty years. Without exception. The country was lied to. Here is what the study found.🧵

why is it always the ones with no balls who keep asking for a bigger ballroom?
Lindsey Graham says they are going introduce legislation that’s going to authorize 400 million dollars to be spent on building the ballroom: We pay for it by offsetting it with customs fees. The sooner we get the ballroom built, the better it is for the country.

Why? Why is Trump doing this?
Turns out they did, in fact, renew the general license on Russian oil. This will likely mean billions in new funding for Russia to fuel its war on Ukraine.

Private equity firms bought 500 hospitals. Death rates in their emergency rooms went up 13%. They fired 12% of the staff. Then they paid themselves billions in dividends. A Harvard study just confirmed what doctors already knew: people are dying so investors can hit quarterly targets. Exactly what happens. A PE firm buys a hospital using debt. The debt gets placed on the hospital's balance sheet, not the firm's. Now the hospital owes hundreds of millions it never borrowed. To service that debt, the hospital cuts costs. Costs mean nurses. The numbers from the Harvard/University of Chicago study are horrifying. After PE acquisition, emergency department salary spending dropped 18.2%. ICU salary spending dropped 15.9%. Hospital-wide employees were cut 11.6%. Emergency department deaths rose 13%, seven additional deaths per 10,000 visits. A separate study found patients undergoing surgery at PE-acquired hospitals had 17% higher odds of dying within 90 days. Steward Health Care, owned by Cerberus Capital, filed bankruptcy with $9 billion in debt after closing hospitals across Massachusetts. The CEO lived on a $40 million yacht while emergency rooms went dark. Eight hospitals serving 2 million people nearly disappeared because a PE fund extracted more cash than the system could survive. The private equity industry has poured over $1 trillion into healthcare. They operate a quarter of ERs nationwide. This isn't going away. The investing angle nobody talks about. Non-PE hospital operators like HCA Healthcare (HCA) and Tenet (THC) are the direct beneficiaries. Every time a PE hospital closes or deteriorates, patients flow to the nearest competitor. HCA has returned 1,200% since 2011. Patient volume from PE closures is a structural tailwind nobody's pricing in. Medical staffing firms (AMN Healthcare, Cross Country) charge premium rates specifically because PE hospitals cut staff. The staffing shortage IS the business model for these companies. The disruption play: outpatient surgical centers (SCA Health, now part of UnitedHealth) are pulling profitable procedures out of hospitals entirely. PE-owned hospitals lose their highest-margin surgeries to outpatient, and the death spiral accelerates. Pull up tradevision and monitor healthcare M&A alerts, hospital closure filings, and patient volume migration data. When a PE-owned hospital announces "restructuring," the patient volume shift to competitors like HCA starts within 30 days. That 30-day window is when the competitor's earnings revisions haven't updated yet. Free to try. (a private equity firm bought your local hospital. borrowed $500 million in the hospital's name. fired 12% of the nurses. emergency room deaths rose 13%. then they paid themselves dividends. nobody went to prison. they're currently buying another hospital.)

I think starting a war with Iran is a bad idea, and Trump specifically ran against regime change wars in the middle east. Reasonable people can disagree on the merits, but calling opponents "borderline traitors" is a reprisal of the dumbest Iraq-war era political bullshit.
I always laugh at yo-yo’s who don’t have the 1st clue what information the President had that forced this decision. Even politicians who despise him but were briefed on the situation seem to agree with this operation. I guess lotta podcasters know better. 😂. Gotta keep the lights on somehow. Borderline traitors if you ask me. Iran is a terror nation with a long history of some of the worst human rights atrocities in the world. Nobody disputes that fact. They hate Americans. They hate Israel. They hate all Jews. They hate the West. They would kill us all if given the chance. They just murdered tens of thousands of their own people. The rest of the Middle East is on our side. The Iranian people are on our side. It isn’t that complicated to support our Troops and our country this morning. We are on the right side here. God Bless America . 🇺🇸

1. It’s not a “Ukraine war”, it’s a Russian war against Ukraine, Europe, and freedom 2. It’s not “4 years”, it’s 12 years, as Russia attacked Ukraine in 2014. In 2022 it increased the intensity of the war, but the war started much earlier 3. It’s not the war for territories, Russia doesn’t care about “Donbas”, it wants to expand for the sake of expansion, to have the capacity to expand, to export violence outside, otherwise it knows it will be turned inside 4. It’s not “Russia vs western imperialism” because Russia wants to re-imperialise the world, to bring empires back. to end the decolonization process of the 20th century, to divide the world between the “great powers” 5. It’s not “let’s make a deal and it will be fine”, Russia will stop only when it is stopped. In order to have peace you need to put Russia into a weak position where the only option for it is to stop. Flattering Russia, suggesting compromises will only persuade Putin that his opponents are weak I said it back in 2014: the fear of provoking Russia provokes Russia. It’s still valid

In the French Alps for school break, I met two Russian families…One, living in Moscow and the other from St. Petersburg. I asked them about the war…they weren’t really concerned as both men were in their 40s and haven’t been affected by the war as of yet. Why does the west allow Russian passport holders travel freely around Europe for vacation? Are we serious about this war or is it just casual? Why not complete travel bans?! #Russia

This policy led to the US becoming the freest, richest, and most powerful country in the history of the world. Everyone wanted to come here, to be American, for their children to be American, and to thrive as America thrived. You would destroy all of that out of racist spite.
Replying to @StephenM
In America, for generations now, the policy has been that anyone who would economically benefit from moving to the US can do so, exercise the franchise in the US and their children, the moment they are born, will be full American citizens with all the rights and benefits therein.

Making deals with Trump is *exactly* like playing chess with a pigeon.
Notice how you don't hear anything about Greenland any more all of a sudden? Not even from Trump. As I discussed previously, Denmark's largest pension fund started selling US treasuries after Trump claimed he held all the cards. In response, Trump threatened all of Europe that they better stop it or else he was going to retaliate. So a Swedish pension fund started dumping its treasuries, too. Trump caved, and made a "deal" (with NATO Secretary Mark Rutte) - ignoring for a moment that Denmark and Greenland were excluded from these "negotiations", so there was no deal - to *checks notes* get the same privileges the US always had, he took a quick victory lap, and then memory holed the entire thing. Anyhow, that's why it's been over a week since you've heard the word "Greenland". And likely never will again. The MAGA way. Claim victory, even in the face of overwhelming defeat.

I grew up conditioned to mock the loony libs, a habit formed in the early Rush Limbaugh years. I no longer feel the urge. Those libs are now fighting for America’s core principles, while the people who taught me to sneer at them have abandoned principles altogether.
