This is great advice for AI application builders:
"go deep enough that a foundation model can’t care, and sticky enough that users won’t leave even when they can."
i’d say the opposite: the real white space is at the application layer.
everyone wants to sell shovels, but the gold is in how people actually use them.
the infra race is a knife fight between hyperscalers: openai, google, anthropic, meta, amazon. they’ll undercut each other on price, latency, context window, and token cost until margins collapse.
developer tooling looks safer, but it’s crowding fast and every improvement gets absorbed upstream by the foundation models or downstream by open-source forks.
meanwhile, applications are where behavioural moats form. data isn’t the only barrier. habits are:
-users don’t live in apis or eval dashboards; they live in experiences.
-context, workflow, brand, and trust compound fast
-distribution and feedback loops create data advantages that scale locally even when models converge globally.
you win if you own feedback surface to capture every edit, action, and intent/ build domain depth/ embed in daily workflows/ collect proprietary exhaust (behaviour and telemetry that the model providers will never see).
some infra will break through- security, evals, low-latency edge, compliance- but the broader white space is still at the application layer, where people, agents, and systems actually interact.
go deep enough that a foundation model can’t care, and sticky enough that users won’t leave even when it can.

Adtech pals, you're not AI-pilled enough yet.
Let's change that. Two things for ya:

i love anish so i will respectfully disagree here.
when jobs launched the app store, there was no general reasoning underneath iphone. here, chatgpt already has world knowledge, context, & intelligence baked in. every long tail app is already baked into gpt or better yet it can simply generate it.
so with this in mind most valuable “apps” will just be thin wrappers around missing data. if you’re zillow, that’s housing data. if you’re canva, maybe that’s design templates (although openai can likely make posters already).
it’s not really an application play.. it’s a data play. & giving your data to openai is effectively deepening their moat, since every app built here trains their system to do what you do. users stay in chatgpt. your edge decays over time.
in essence devs are feeding openai context it doesn’t yet have, which then increases openai’s moat. the more useful their plugin, the faster their own differentiation evaporates.
we’ll see how this plays out but i think it’s imho it’s not yet equivalent to app store even with 100x distribution.

The new President of Romania has 2 perfect score Gold medals on the International Math Olympiad (IMO), a feat only 25 people have ever achieved in history!
First the pope, and now this. First they learn about higher dimensional spaces and then they excel in all of them.

Forcing Google to sell Chrome is just stupid. We already have plenty of alternatives, like Firefox and Chromium. All the value in Chrome is that Google is incentivized to CONTINUE to invest heavily in moving the web forward. It's a classic wealth v riches misunderstanding.

OpenAI recently released a guide on building agents which contains some misguided takes
There's a lot of FUD, confusion, hype, and noise around agents
I wrote a blog on how to think about agent frameworks. Includes:
Background Info
- What is an agent?
- What is hard about building agents?
- What is LangGraph?
Flavors of agentic frameworks
- “Agents” vs “workflows”
- Declarative vs non-declarative
- Agent abstractions
- Multi agent
Common Questions
- What is the value of a framework?
- As the models get better, will everything become agents instead of workflows?
- What did OpenAI get wrong in their take?
- How do all the agent frameworks compare?

do things manually before you automate it
do things yourself before you hire for it
do things uneconomically before you make it cheap
do things before you stop yourself from doing things

What does “Do things that don’t scale” mean? I’m interpreting that as do things that don’t grow. What am I missing?

Closed source, opaque, censorious, politically manipulative vs open source and free is not the winning position the US needs.

Over the past months I’ve increasingly encountered questions about “Europe’s decline in tech”. I wanted to share my response to these questions here. While I am realistic about Europe's modest past success, and that there are no trillion dollar companies, I am optimistic about its future. In fact, I "put my money where my mouth is" and chose to bet my career on it – I have been doing venture on the continent for over a decade instead of moving to Silicon Valley.
Here are some of my thoughts on the topic.

The key insight with Shape Up was to give up on software estimates entirely. Flip the script. Pick a budget but leave the scope flexible. Then ship the very best you can do within that budget. Works like magic. Great software shipped every 6 weeks. basecamp.com/shapeup
Ron Jeffries apologized for inventing Story Points.
He then went to call the whole idea of software estimation "evil."
Story points is the Emperor's New Clothes.
Everyone I've seen—and I mean everyone—uses points as a measure of time:
1 point = 2 hours
3 points = 1 day
5 points = 3 days
...
People knows this is what's happening, but nobody says anything. They just pretend they are being "agile."
What a cancer.
If your company forces you to participate in this charade, I'm sorry.

Will Apple Intelligence break the app economy?
With iOS 18, through the introduction of Apple Intelligence, Apple has made improvements to Siri through the integration of AI features that allow it to more adeptly process natural language. In concert with this, Apple has expanded App Intents with App Intents Domains, allowing Siri to interpret specific commands and apply them to defined App Intents within and across apps, as well as to use on-screen and device-level context to better service user requests.
This is a meaningful expansion of the capabilities made possible with App Intents and has raised a poignant question: Will the expansion of App Intents obviate the need to engage with apps directly and render developers even more dependent on Apple for discovery through Siri and other touchpoints?

Tl;dr: Sandbox has major structural problems that aren’t close to being resolved.
🚨@CMAgovUK just released their report on Google’s Privacy Sandbox. This is a thread of key points.
For the CMA the unanswered questions are:
1⃣How to ensure design doesn't self preference.
2⃣What does long term governance look like.
3⃣Should 1P Data usage be restricted on O&O.
