After the surprise outcome of the Brazilian election, I was curious if AI forecasting tools predicted the outcomes correctly. It turns out a top AI tool (FutureSearch) made the same errors as prediction markets more broadly. This is an example of what @random_walker and I mean by “intrinsic limits” to prediction that have nothing to do with the AI tools in question, but rather depend on the inherent uncertainty in the world. Of course, a single failed prediction doesn’t mean that AI isn’t good at forecasting; in fact AI tools are already about as good as top forecasters, and I expect human forecasters to make heavy use of AI tools improve their own forecasts. But the inherent uncertainty in predicting social outcomes like elections means that AI tools’ performance will be limited close to that of top experts using simple automated tools (rather than being apparently unbounded with more compute, such as AI’s performance on chess).
Is this shaping up to be one of the biggest prediction market whiffs of all time?

🇧🇷Brazil runoff on @Kalshi, in one chart. Bolsonaro traded at 80%+ for two days. In the space of about an hour this afternoon, Lula went from 20% to 70% and Bolsonaro collapsed to 31%, on the heaviest volume of the market's life. The bottom panel tells the story: low volumes all weekend, then everything at once as results came in. Track live on @TheTerminal

I asked Chris Christie, former New Jersey governor and Vivek Ramaswamy's fiercest critic during the 2024 nomination fight, about the attack ad and Vance's defense. "For the last decade, our party has been infected by a corrupted moral center," he said. Full comment here:
WOW -- Vance *defends* Ramaswamy's reprehensible ad 👇 Q: Ramaswamy's campaign put out a controversial ad featuring his opponent's mother. Some Republicans are backing away from that. Do you think that ad was appropriate? JD VANCE: Well, I'll be honest with you. Whether the ad was appropriate or not is not really my concern. My concern is who is gonna govern. I have to admit I'm a little bit disgusted when I see Republicans who are whining more about that ad than they are about what the Democrats want to do.
