2017 was an eventful year. But one memory stood out: when Darl Synder, a reader, sent me an American Flag in the mail. I was on assignment overseas when I got an email from my equipment manager asking me if I bought a television and had it sent to the office. ⬇️

Many struggling Americans now find their difficulties compounded by President Trump's cuts in food stamps and health care. On a 1,000 mile road trip, I met people like Trinity Goodman, who survives by selling blood plasma, has $3.78 in her bank account, one cent in her savings account to keep it open, and six pennies in cash.
And the group most likely to live in poverty in America? Children, especially children under 2. They aren't lazy, and they aren't irresponsible, yet they are being set up for failure that will haunt all of us. And while it's easy to focus on Trump's policies, and we should, both parties have dropped the ball and failed so many. A gift link to my column: nytimes.com/2026/08/01/opini…

This, also from NYT, is absolutely heart-breaking, and gets at why just "surviving" the current crisis can't be the end game, let alone be celebrated or romanticized. Cubans deserve a way out.

In Taiwan, civilians are preparing for a conflict they hope never comes.
The Globe's international visual correspondent Marcus Yam spent more than two weeks shadowing the island’s budding civil defence movement, and learned it’s about more than strategizing for potential war with China.

A decade ago, Taiwan's economy was highly reliant on China.
Today Taiwan invests almost nothing in China and is projected to clock economic growth of 10% this year vs China's 4.3%.
Taiwan has shown that it is possible to pivot away from China and thrive.

Brilliant piece by my @defpriorities colleague @jekavanagh in the NYT. I particularly like this insight: "...history has shown that Asian countries with diverse interests and forms of government can build working partnerships without deep U.S. participation. The 11-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations, founded in 1967, is often criticized as slow and indecisive in responding to shared challenges ... But ASEAN has helped to maintain peace among its members in a part of Asia previously torn by decades of war and provided a framework for Southeast Asia to engage with China."
The transition to a more self-reliant Asian security order that requires less of the U.S. is underway.
For @nytopinion I argue that this is unavoidable.
An over-extended U.S. that has squandered its military power cannot underwrite Asia's security anymore. It will have to pull back & the region itself will have to fill the gaps.
It's good news that Asia is already adjusting to this reality.

'There was a stunning Freedom of Information release last week of a CIA note that indicated that the CIA did not believe that the Venezuelan elections from 2006 to 2020 were significantly affected by election fraud. So the imposition of the vast bulk of Western sanctions which crippled Venezuela over that period – and at one point caused devastating famine and mass emigration – were knowingly based on a lie.'
A great deal of effort and attention went into this article on the Karim Khan case and on Venezuela, and it contains key information you will find literally nowhere else.
I was up all night writing and editing, and published at 7am.
