The Chronicles of Georgia, a massive and unfinished monument located on Keeni Hill overlooking the Tbilisi Sea in Tbilisi, Georgia 🇬🇪 The monument sits on a hill above the Tbilisi Sea, a large reservoir on the city’s northeastern edge. It was designed by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who began work on it in 1985. It has never been fully completed. The structure is made up of 16 huge bronze-covered pillars, each around 30-35m tall. That’s roughly the height of a 10-story building. Every pillar tells a story. The upper sections show Georgia’s kings, queens and heroes, along with key moments from the nation’s long history. The lower sections depict scenes from the life of Christ, reflecting Georgia’s deep Christian roots. It was one of the first countries in the world to adopt Christianity as a state religion, in the fourth century. Visitors climb a wide stone staircase to reach the pillars, where the carved figures tower overhead. On clear days, the site also offers sweeping views of the reservoir, the city and the mountains beyond. Despite its size, it remains surprisingly quiet and lightly visited. Tsereteli was one of the world’s most prolific monument builders. His works include the towering Peter the Great statue on the Moscow River, nearly 100m tall. #archaeohistories
