2. When I was a child in the 1940s, my mother would cut up slices of fruit for me (there wasn't much) and as she put it in front of me she would say, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." How about, “A sonnet a day keeps the doctor away”? So...here we go: Sonnet 1.

This would normally seem obvious, but given current trends I see on this app it might as well be said: Be like Jean-Luc Picard. An articulate, thoughtful, responsible, assertive commander who wakes up every day thinking about the wellbeing of the people on his ship and their mission. Not Anakin Skywalker. An emo, selfish, violent person who couldn’t for the life of him articulate what he’d do ahead of time or why, and asks for more power. The fact that he’s trending now says something about those trending him.

What a heartbreaking week it has been. Sir Patrick Stewart was a friend, a colleague, and a magnificent actor. From the stage to the bridge of the Enterprise, he brought intelligence, grace, and a deep sense of humanity to everything he did. Captain Picard stood for the best of us, and so did the man who played him. I was filled with affection and admiration for him and his work. My heart goes out to Sunny and his family. He will be deeply missed.

„Was wir hinterlassen, ist nicht so wichtig wie die Art, wie wir gelebt haben. Denn letztlich sind wir alle nur sterblich.“ Was für eine traurige Nachricht. Captain Picard hat sich auf seine letzte Reise gemacht. Goodspeed, Sir Patrick Stewart.

What can lava samples tell us about Kīlauea’s recent summit lava fountains? 🌋 Since the current eruption began in late 2024, scientists with our USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory have analyzed 178 lava samples from episodes 1–39 to better understand the magma feeding the eruption and changes occurring beneath the surface. Here’s what they found: 💠 Variations in fountain height and episode duration are not associated with significant compositional changes 💠 The eruption is fed by lava from the magma chamber that is about a mile (1–2 km) beneath Halemaʻumaʻu 💠 There is evidence that the parts of former lava lake eruptions in Halemaʻumaʻu (between 2020–2023) remain molten below the surface and sometimes influence the chemistry of material erupted by lava fountaining 💠 A subtle change in chemistry suggests that a new magma was erupted within a few weeks of the eruption onset 💠 Kīlauea’s shallow magma storage system beneath Halemaʻumaʻu showed an increase in temperature through fountaining episodes 1–39 Together, these findings offer new clues about the magma system driving Kīlauea’s ongoing eruption. 🚨 BREAKING: Three new Bitcoin Core vulnerabilities discovered including a bug allowing attackers to remotely brick nodes. The vulnerabilities include two medium-severity flaws that could allow malicious peers to exhaust node memory and a third that could corrupt blockchain undo data under extreme conditions. @ProjectLoupe, an AI-powered security initiative at @spiral_xyz, independently identified the vulnerabilities alongside other researchers, including @L0RINC of the #Bitcoin Red Team 🟥. Fixes have been released in Bitcoin Core versions 29.5, 30.4, 31.2, and 32.1, although certain 32-bit and FAT32 configurations remain vulnerable to the third issue.

83 years ago today, German soldiers landed in North America. Almost nobody found out for nearly 40 years. On October 22, 1943, the U-boat U-537 slipped into a remote bay near the northern tip of Labrador. Its mission wasn't to fight. It was to steal the weather. Weather in the North Atlantic moves west to east. Whoever knew what was forming over Canada and Greenland could predict conditions over Europe and the convoy routes days in advance. The Allies had stations all over that region. Germany had almost nothing. So Siemens built Germany a robot. An automatic weather station that could measure temperature, pressure, wind, and humidity, then radio coded reports back on its own every few hours. U-537 carried one across the Atlantic, along with a meteorologist named Dr. Kurt Sommermeyer. The crossing was brutal. A storm battered the boat and tore away part of its anti-aircraft armament. But they made it. A landing party rowed ashore with about ten canisters, each weighing over 200 pounds, and hauled them up the rocky ground while armed lookouts watched the horizon. In about a day, they had the station assembled. A tall antenna mast. Battery canisters. Instruments. They named it "Kurt," after the meteorologist. Then they disguised it. They painted the canisters with the words "Canadian Meteor Service." There was no such agency. They were betting that anyone who stumbled across it in that wilderness would assume it belonged to the Canadian government and walk away. They even left empty American cigarette packs lying around. Then U-537 disappeared back into the Atlantic. The station only worked for a short time, likely just a couple of weeks, before its transmissions stopped. U-537 never made it home. A year later, it was sunk with all hands by the American submarine USS Flounder in the Java Sea. And here's the wild part. Labrador wasn't even part of Canada in 1943. It belonged to Newfoundland, a separate British dominion that didn't join Canada until 1949. For decades, no one knew Kurt existed. Then in the late 1970s, a retired Siemens engineer researching Germany's wartime weather stations found records of the mission. He contacted a Canadian military historian. In 1981, they reached the site. Kurt was still there. Canisters scattered across the rocks. The fake "Canadian Meteor Service" markings still on them. The only armed German landing in North America during WW2, hidden in plain sight for almost 40 years. Today you can see it at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa.

Here is what most Americans have never been told: Between 2013 and 2025, 39% of the Fed’s interest-on-reserve payments, roughly $235 billion, went to foreign or majority-foreign-owned banks. About $10 billion went to Chinese banks alone. It’s time to conduct a full audit of the Fed so we know where our money is spent.
