Independent/self publishing has been the best choice for most authors for at least a decade. But now?
When the editing and marketing staffs and budgets of the traditional publishers have been gutted?
When, unless you're a million-dollar unicorn, you're lucky to get a contact at the publisher you can email?
When your best roulette spin at brick-and-mortar fame is two weeks with your book's spine jammed between all the rest before it's chucked into a black hole, and the contract to finish the series you pitched never arrives?
When the publishers have handed the very work their reputation for "expertise" is built on over to AI, and it's inventing hallucinated quotes from your own book?
To aspiring authors, I say this as gently as possible: let go of a romantic dream that hasn't existed in the real world for a long time, if it ever did. If you truly want to share your stories with the world, embrace independent publishing.

With Big 5 publishers pushing AI on authors, agents using AI to screen manuscripts, lit journals rejecting 99% of submissions because editors no longer like to actually edit, and prizes going to AI slop then getting retracted (when the committee isn’t trying to gaslight everyone), writers have no choice but to write for the fun of it and to please themselves. But also: why should we bother submitting anymore?
For @WIRED, I spoke with Macmillan and PRH staff about AI at the rest of the Big Five.
I also spoke with bestselling authors who've gone to "war" with publishers over AI use and are now demanding disclosures and threatening to leave their publishers altogether.

The aidol really is just fancy autocomplete working from a lossly compressed image of the internet and all the "intelligence" is smoke and mirrors and your own self deception.
It's just like stage magic and hypnosis.
There is no there there, snap out of it dummies.

"But JD, this and that really smart persons say it's really intellect in a box, and maybe even a will."
Well they're wrong.
Sorry to say, but smart people can get conned. And sometimes they're in on the con.

There’s this old business story still taught to this day in business schools. There was this American chemical producer who was looking to expand markets and started selling in Europe. The euro producers hated it so they dropped their prices-

It’s remarkable how British TV in the 90s produced two shows as good as Sharpe and Hornblower.

Almost exactly two years ago, Jelly called for the abolition of the monstrosity that is paper straws.
Clearly the world’s scientific and political elites have listened.

I guarantee you that it isn’t the case that nothing is being done. Podcasters are simply not being included in the discussions. Which is very, very wise and pisses them off to no end.
