PHILLIP BRETT & THE POLITICS OF ILLUSION.
Gavin Brett, was just 18 years old, as he stood with his some of friends on a warm Summer Night outside St Enda's GAA Club on the Hightown Road in Glengormley.
It was July 2001, and the Good Friday Agreement had been signed just three years earlier. This was supposed to be the era of new found peace.
Gavin was a Protestant and his friends were Catholic. None of that mattered to them. Gavin had been attending St Enda's for the 18th birthday party of his good friend Michael Farrell.
As they all laughed & joked outside the Club, a Saloon car drove past, shots were fired, and Gavin was hit twice.
Gavin's father Michael, a paramedic, rushed to the scene of the shooting and gave his son CPR, but all attempts to revive Gavin failed, and he died in his father's arms.
Lying close to Gavin, was his friend, Michael Farrell who had also been shot & wounded in the attack.
The Vauxhall Nova Saloon car was later found burnt out in the nearby Loyalist New Mossley Estate in Newtownabbey.
There was widespread political condemnation of the murder.
The attack was claimed by the Red Hand Defenders, a cover name for both the UDA & LVF.
The PSNI had little doubt that the UDA had carried out the attack.
The UDA had shot Gavin that night because they had presumed that he was a Catholic.
But they were wrong...
Gavin's younger brother is Philip Brett who is now a DUP MLA in the Stormont Assembly. He represents North Belfast encompassing the Newtownabbey area.
In May this year, Philip Brett proudly stood for a photo with the Cloughfern Young Conquerors Flute Band from the Rathcoole Estate in Newtownabbey.
That band are strongly linked with the UDA/UFF in Newtownabbey and they carry the flags & standards of that organisation.
Philip Brett had just obtained financial funding for the band. A band that is openly linked with a Loyalist terrorist organisation who the Police had suspected in the killing of his brother.
Brett has since scoffed at reporters questions over the picture, claiming that they were "demonising loyalist communities".
In the past year, Philip Brett has become one of the most outspoken members of the DUP at Stormont. His behaviour towards First Minister Michelle O'Neill at a recent Committee Meeting drew widespread criticism from both political & media quarters.
He regularly speaks about "terrorism" & "lawbreaking" within the Stormont Assembly.
Perhaps more than anything, it is the sheer hypocrisy of the DUP that galls so many people here. A Political Party that had strong links to organisations like Ulster Resistance.
A politics of illusion...
HENRY JOY.

I can’t get my head around the absolute frenzy that took place regarding imaginary weapons on the Garvaghy Road, and bare minimum about the 17 bombs and detonators that we’re discovered on the Shankill road.
Crazy stuff.

Forget all the huge supermarkets and their mawkish Christmas adverts, this was the best Christmas advert - Enniskillen pub Charlie's put out this advert back in 2023. It’s brilliant.

Hi @SuellaBraverman, is he still a trooper?
He's just been charged with multiple counts of rape and offences involving indecent images of children.

When he tumbles down the stairs, I honestly can’t stop laughing. I showed this to a 15-year-old who had never heard of Peter Sellers or The Pink Panther, and when she saw this scene, she nearly peed herself laughing so hard!

Political unionism is tearing itself apart again, and the spectacle is extraordinary
Carla Lockhart is leaving the DUP because its leadership won't bring down Stormont over Drumcree. Bryson swans around Stormont as though he has an electoral mandate, in his wonderful leisure suit, while Jim Allister is back on Nolan pontificating about the IRA. WTF is going on; it’s like a reality show gone bad.
Jimbo appears to have dusted off the old playbook from his Ulster Resistance rally days. Decades later, the IRA and Sinn Féin still dominate his political sermons. Yet where is the equivalent outrage about the UVF, UDA and the continuing criminality of loyalist paramilitaries? Even after the revelations this week around bombs and ammunition finds, Loyalist organisations murdered innocent people too, Jimbo, just an FYI. Today, paramilitary intimidation, organised crime and illegal weapons remain serious problems in the very Protestant communities these individuals claim to defend. Jimbo, terrorism is NOT culture simply because its perpetrators wrap themselves in a Union flag.
Then there's Saint Carla, apparently imagining she can resurrect an old-style unionism that bypasses nationalism and treats Catholic voices as an inconvenience. Carla, this isn't the NI of the 1970s. Catholics and nationalists are equal citizens. Sinn Féin is the largest party in the Assembly, and no amount of political grandstanding can erase its democratic mandate. Power-sharing means sharing power, not demanding that the other community disappear whenever you dislike its politics. And the irony of Carla preaching unionist unity while walking out of her own party is remarkable.
Meanwhile, Bryson continues his endless campaign of confrontation, seemingly mistaking political attention for democratic legitimacy. He has even dumped the suit and is circulating Stormont in a fecking tracksuit.
What an extraordinary fecking picture: Lockhart splitting the DUP, Allister revisiting the arguments of the 1980s, and Bryson positioning himself at the centre of yet another confrontation.
All while working-class unionist communities continue to suffer from paramilitary intimidation, deprivation and criminal influence. Where are the practical solutions? Where is the sustained outrage about loyalist criminality? Where are the plans for housing, healthcare, jobs and education?
NI has spent decades trying to move beyond the politics of fear, division and sectarian confrontation. The question for Lockhart and Allister is whether their politics can deliver anything more constructive than another argument about who has betrayed unionism, and when will someone with a moral backbone and some principle try to oust these seriously bad actors? Jesus, surely people deserve better than this pantomime

This is amazing. Legendary actor Bill Murray just WIPED the smile off Trump official Kevin Hassett’s face, who bizarrely grins while discussing America’s struggling economy.
“Tell me your dog died. I want to see what happens to your smile…” Brutal.
