The Premier League is the Super League in sheep's clothing.

PSR was anti-competitive. SCR is arguably worse. Here's why the Premier League's financial rules don't protect competition — they protect the established order. 🧵👇 (all in one post)
SCR lets every club spend 85% of football revenue on their squad. Sounds fair, right? Same percentage for everyone.
Except 85% of £700m is £595m. 85% of £300m is £255m. The rule doesn't level the playing field — it takes the existing revenue gap and writes it into law. The clubs who built their revenue advantage decades ago (much of it in the pre-regulation era) get to spend from a permanently bigger pot.
And here's the part nobody talks about enough: revenue in football follows success. You grow commercial income by winning things and playing in Europe. But to win things you need to spend, and you're only allowed to spend what your current revenue permits. It's a closed loop. The Big Six's moat isn't talent or ideas — it's regulation.
Now look at what happens when a club actually breaks through:
🔴⚪ Newcastle. Ended a 70-year domestic trophy drought, qualified for the Champions League — and their "reward" was selling academy graduates before a June 30 accounting deadline to stay PSR compliant. Pure profit on homegrown players sold not for football reasons, but for spreadsheet reasons.
🟣 Aston Villa. Champions League quarter-finalists. Their prize? Forced player sales every June and UEFA fines, because European qualification drops your squad cost ceiling from 85% to UEFA's 70%. Read that again: succeeding LOWERS your spending headroom relative to your domestic rivals who didn't qualify.
That's the glass ceiling. Win a trophy, reach the CL, do everything right — and the rules snap you back to your "correct" place in the hierarchy.
The league had one genuine chance to fix this: Top-to-Bottom Anchoring, which would have capped everyone's spending at a multiple of the bottom club's TV money. An actual competitive-balance mechanism. The clubs voted it down.
So we're left with a system that calls itself "sustainability" but functions as protectionism. Owners with capital ready to invest are barred from doing so. Challengers are forced to sell their best young players to fund ambition. And the same handful of clubs get regulatory cover to stay on top forever.
Competition law exists to stop incumbents rigging markets against new entrants. English football has done exactly that — and called it fair play.
Fans of the "big 6" will take the piss with all this food chain stuff, but the reality is the financial rules don't allow for other clubs to sustain any sort of a challenge. It's an anti-competitive, closed shop that means we will forever be kept at arms length. What's the point?

Alex Isak hasn’t referenced Newcastle United fans ONCE. Not one. Amongst it all. I get he has no loyalty to Newcastle, but what this fanbase gave to him, for him to throw it back in our faces is an absolute disgrace.
Look at this photo, not even an acknowledgment. #nufc
The cartel normally get there own way 😂

• Julio loan off
• May mean a Guehi snag
• Did Glasner threaten to walk?
• I’m riding emotional tidal waves here
• Don’t have anything else to say
• Proper spun mentally

Liverpool’s expenditure this summer:
Isak £130m
Wirtz £116.5m
Ekitike £69m
Kerkez £40m
Frimpong £29.5m
Mamardashvili £29m
Pecsi £1.5m
Total 415.5m💰
Liverpool fans: 🗣️”Oil clubs are ruining football” 🤣🤣🤣
Wish a certain player up north would look at his professionalism
If you remove emotion from the Ebere Eze deal, getting £67.5m for a 27-year-old who has been an ever-present and transformational presence in our first team for 5 years, scoring pivotal goals and helping us win the first major trophy in our history is superb business.
We signed him for £16m, he’s grown with us, recovered from major setbacks (an Achilles Tendon injury on the day he was called up by England) and matured into a player who you look to for something special when the pressure is on.
QPR fans adored him and still do, Palace fans will always feel the exact same way. He has an irrepressible love for the game, it comes through in the way he plays; he’s the sort of talent everyone wants to watch, the sort of lad you can’t help but root for.
He gave me (and every Palace fan) the greatest moment of my football supporting life in May of 2025 at Wembley; it’ll stay with me until my dying day. The word legend gets thrown around a lot in modern sporting parlance but his achievements in red and blue are truly worthy of the title.
Go well, Ebs. ❤️💙
My captain
That’s a proud captain and Newcastle United player.
