What will your party do for South Africa’s engineering profession and infrastructure?
Engineers, technologists and technicians are voters too.
Which political party has earned the #EngineeringVote?
Replying to @waynesussman
@waynesussman, hypothetically, if a 350,000-strong engineering voting bloc backed one party committed to appointing qualified engineering practitioners #engineers to appropriate technical positions and directing over 80% of infrastructure work to competent consulting engineers and qualified contractors, what electoral impact could that have?
Could such a partnership put engineering back at the forefront of infrastructure delivery? #EngineeringVote #LGE2026
Replying to @NgilungisaZA
Politicians deploying unqualified people to engineering roles need to wake up. It’s a direct recipe for infrastructure failure, and a guaranteed drop in voter support.

Most service failures are scheduled. Nobody just wrote them on the calendar.
An industrial engineer reads a municipality like a production line. Every pump, valve, transformer and fleet vehicle has a working life, a failure pattern and a service interval. Ignore them and the breakdown arrives right on time.
Before: fix it when it breaks, buy spares in a panic, residents wait for days.
After: a current asset register, planned maintenance budgeted yearly, spares on the shelf, response times published.
That takes planning, done by technicians, technologists and engineers who are allowed to plan.
An Engineer-General could check that municipalities keep real maintenance plans and report on them in public. Water and power are rights, and maintenance is how engineers keep them working.
Councillors, ask your technical team one question this week: show me the maintenance plan.

Lol - the vote of registered engineers should be weighted 3x
Engineering practitioners potentially influence a wider voting community of over 300,000 people. Add that to the profession itself and we could be talking about a potential 350,000-vote constituency.
@waynesussman, if “Engineering” were a political party concentrated in our metros, what could 350,000 votes achieve? Could that voting bloc hold the balance of power and influence the formation of coalition governments? #EngineeringVote #LGE2026
52,156 engineering practitioners are registered on the @ECSAOfficial database. All things being equal, that’s potentially 52,156 votes for engineering. Let’s make the #EngineeringVote count.

political interference? 100%. procurement is designed to fail so tendas can be eaten. engineers are the last people to blame here
Replying to @NgilungisaZA
The press conference suggests that politicians, rather than engineers, are leading efforts to address the infrastructure crisis. What is needed is the political will to put engineers in the right technical roles and empower them to apply their expertise in service of society. #PoliticalInterference must fall. #AgendaForEngineering xitter.cf/TimesLIVE/status/21146…

When the bulk supply is turned down, the last house on the hill feels it first.
Water does not simply arrive. It is pumped, stored and pushed uphill by pressure. Restrict the supply and a network is tested at its weakest points: reservoirs that drain overnight, pumps that cannot keep up, leaks that waste what little arrives.
A mechanical engineer reads a dry tap as a pressure and storage problem, not only a supply problem. Civil, electrical and control engineers hold the other pieces of the same system.
Rand Water's restrictions on Johannesburg and Tshwane are that test, live:
xitter.cf/mailandguardian/status…
An Engineer-General would ask before the next one: does every metro have the qualified people and maintained assets to share water fairly to every home?
Water is a right. Engineers make it reach the tap.

South Africa’s constitutional architecture has a missing seat: independent engineering oversight. An Office of the Engineer-General can help fill that gap, strengthening accountability and ensuring infrastructure delivers for the people.

Cry, our beloved engineering profession.
Engineers, engineering professionals and artisans should not be unemployed in a country facing an infrastructure crisis.

Dear @lefa_Max @thiitumz and the engineering community
We need to take this struggle to the major political parties: @MYANC @Our_DA @MkhontoweSizwex @EFFSouthAfrica @vote_ifp @OnsBaizaNie @Action4SA @VFPlus.
They cannot afford to sideline engineers while communities are deprived of affordable, safe and quality public infrastructure.
The era of appointing unqualified people to engineering positions and awarding engineering tenders to inappropriately qualified or inexperienced engineering consultants and contractors must end. It is a lose-lose situation for engineers, government and, most importantly, society.
@DepartmentPWI Minister @DeanMacpherson can help put engineering expertise at the forefront of infrastructure and service delivery. What is needed is political will.
#LGE2026 is an opportunity to build the #EngineeringVote and strengthen #EngineeringInfluence.

Service delivery matters are engineering matters.
Our question to political leaders: Are you willing to appoint and empower engineers?
For those already sitting in councils, the question is even sharper: What is your record of appointing appropriately qualified engineers to lead municipal engineering and infrastructure functions?
The Bronkhorstspruit water crisis, and the wider crisis of raw sewage being discharged into our rivers and oceans, raises serious questions about the role of engineers and the engineering profession.
Are witnessing a dereliction of professional duty by engineers and engineering professionals entrusted with protecting public health, infrastructure and the environment?
We need to establish where authority sits, where professional engineering advice is being ignored, and where accountability ultimately lies.
Let’s fix this country. Let us hope that the @PublicProtector's investigation helps uncover the root causes of these failures, strengthens accountability, empowers engineering professionals to fulfil their responsibilities, and ultimately restores affordable, safe and reliable service delivery to our communities.

A dark traffic light is not a broken bulb. It is a broken system.
See a junction the way a control engineer does:
- a signal controller that needs clean, backed-up power
- detectors and cabling protected from theft and vandalism
- timing plans updated as traffic grows
- a maintenance plan signed off by a competent professional
Fail one, and the whole junction fails. Pedestrians, taxis, ambulances and learners pay the price.
Electronic, electrical, control and transport engineers, with technologists and technicians, make a safe crossing real every day. An independent Engineer-General would ask what no tender report asks: is the design right for our conditions, is maintenance funded, is the person in charge qualified?
Safe movement is part of a dignified life. Let us engineer it that way.
