The Democratic Party (@TheDemocrats) has devolved into a sanctuary for defeatists, antisemites, and Islamists. I'm dismantling my lab at @UHouston and discovering forgotten "treasures." One recent find: Race and Races by Richard Goldsby (1971), with a foreword by Kurt Stern. Both authors argue that races are real but cannot be ranked. In a sense, this occupies an intermediate position between the older claim that races are real and can be hierarchically ranked, and the newer claim that races are social constructs and therefore not biologically real.
One way to support this untenable position is by invoking an analogy with domesticated dog breeds, conveniently ignoring the fact that all humans are mutts, not purebreds.
Who cares? Neither are relevant anymore.

The term “mitochondrial Eve” was coined by @ScienceMagazine journalist Roger Lewin in October 1987. Shown below is the cover of @Newsweek from January 11, 1988. This catchy label has been causing confusion ever since, thanks to its Biblical overtones and the popular misconception that (1) “mitochondrial Eve” was the first female Homo sapiens, and (2) that she not only met “Y-chromosome Adam,” but perhaps even shared an apple and some sperm with him.
This cover also reminded me that the most pessimistic book in the Bible, Ecclesiastes, with its: “What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; and there is nothing new under the sun” is mostly correct. (Hint: Look at the top of the cover.) Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose.

#Spain. In 1492, Spain became “Judenfrei.” During WWII, fascist Francisco Franco maintained a close alliance with Nazi Germany. In May 1941, Spain's Chief of Security, José María Finat, issued a directive to all provincial governors to compile a secret registry of every Jew living in Spain. The list of 6,000 Jews was handed to the SS leader, Heinrich Himmler. In 1945, the government attempted to destroy all records of this list, but failed.
The current Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, officially a socialist, is much more antisemitic than Franco. Under his leadership, the number of antisemitic incidents in Spain increased by close to 350%. Incidentally, the anticolonial posture of Pedro Sánchez does not include #Ceuta and #Melilla, which by right and geography belong to Morocco. Nor has this Socialist provided any compensation for the looting of most of Latin America, the killing of the native population there, and enslaving of Africans.🧵
#TheNetherlands. The "philosemitic" reputation of the Dutch rests in part on its tolerance for the Sephardi Jews expelled from Spain, and in modern time on the fact that some good people hid Anne Frank and her family, while ignoring the fact that Anne Frank and many other Jews were betrayed by the Dutch.
During World War II, the Jewish population of the Netherlands suffered one of the highest extermination rates in Western Europe (73%). The machinery of deportation and murder in the Netherlands relied heavily on the local population. The roughly 35,000 Jewish survivors who returned to the Netherlands faced a cold, bureaucratic reception. Many found their homes occupied by neighbors, their bank accounts drained, and their stolen properties heavily taxed by the post-war Dutch government for "unpaid taxes" accrued during the occupation years.
Over 100,000 suspected collaborators were arrested or detained in camps immediately following the war, but the numbers of despicables was certainly much larger. In 2020, the government issued the first official apology for the failure of Dutch authorities to protect its Jewish citizens during the Holocaust and for transporting more than 100,000 Jews to death camps. The Dutch national railway decided to pay compensation to ~ 5,000 Holocaust survivors and direct descendants. By the 2025 deadline, ~5,000 Jews received compensation ranging from $5,685 to 17,000.
Currently, the Netherlands is the center of #Eurabia. Amsterdam is 17% Muslim, with Rotterdam, The Hague, and Utrecht not far behind. Antisemitic attacks are rampant. In 2022, the number of antisemitic incidents was 155, in 2025, the number was 880. The numbers for 2026 are not yet in, but the incidents are marked by coordinated arson and bombings targeting Jewish schools, synagogues, and institutions.
