Everyone always talks about how crazy hyper-partisanship is now but on a pure rhetorical basis it’s actually very mild compared with the way that old school southern democrats like Ann Richards or James Carville talk. The way Richards talks about “Republicans” with open, colorful contempt and actually made total sense in the environment she grew up in. Texas (and most southern states) were like 100% Democrat run for 100 years. I had a greatest generation relative who went to her grave THIS YEAR having never voted for a single Republican in her entire life despite being a white southerner who casually used the n-word as a synonym for “black person,” until like, idk, the early 2010s?
