In a world full of digital distractions, context is crucial for behavior change.
Psychologists call it situation modificationâchanging environments to support better choices.
Thatâs why I launched Phones in Focusâa national study on how school phone policies can support student focus, well-being, and success.

When groups meet to brainstorm, good ideas are lost. People bite their tongues due to conformity pressure, noise, and ego threat.
A better approach is brainwriting: generate ideas separately, then meet to assess and refine.
Group wisdom begins with individual creativity.

It's been a while since in-person exams for me so I'm really excited to do Test Talks again.
For the first 5 minutes of the exam, students talk w/ each other while looking at the exam w/out writing utensils. So many benefits including lowered test anxiety and rich conversations.

Iâm hearing from older teens and young adults that theyâre frustrated with feeling tired all the time. Right now is tiring. I keep saying this. Right now is tiring. Processing stress and living in a state of uncertainty is emotionally exhausting. Own that. Rest.

Part 1: Propose to your students that THEY can create their end of unit assessment. âReally?! WE can write the questions?!â Give them time to reflect, draft, and assemble the test.

If a student needs extra time in #googleClassroom... that "missing" and "late" red words is really really really stressful. Unassign the student from the assignment. REUSE POST. Assign to only that student(s) and give a new due date. #googleEDU

A culture that needs cancelling:
For many students, the benefits of cheating, of piling up more points and âgettingâ higher grades, outweigh any costs. If it wasnât âworthâ it, they wouldnât have any reason to do it. We must cancel the grades as currency culture.
