🧵The @WSJ headline: buy, borrow, die is $5.4 trillion* * By $5.4T we mean $1.6T** ** By $1.6T we mean $500B*** *** By $500B, we mean somewhat less because part of that is margin trading/business debt. What matters for tax avoidance is what's used for personal consumption.
Nice piece by @margotpatrick in @WSJ. The $5.4T sounds like a lot of buy-borrow-die. But it’s: - global - all wealth levels - credit lines (actual borrowing: ~$1.6T) US share: ~$0.5T, vs. $23T in unrealized gains for the top 1% alone. It’s real but small, just as we found. 🧵

Vital to understand that buy-borrow-die is nowhere near as big or prevalent as is being portrayed, and is not a justification for wealth taxation. ⬇️
Replying to @George_A_Callas
The evidence is that the "buy, borrow, die" loophole is probably big enough to justify a targeted loophole closer, but nowhere near big enough to justify broad-based wealth or mark-to-market taxes. Three weeks ago, I explored this is more depth: georgecallas.substack.com/p/… END 🧵

Looking specifically at methane (CH₄) in the red-highlighted band near the infrared spectrum (10µm range), we observe its absorption band in a relatively narrow wavelength region. However, when comparing this with the absorption by water vapor (H₂O) in the cyan-highlighted area, it becomes clear that water vapor absorbs broadly and significantly across much of the infrared spectrum, including wavelengths that overlap methane's absorption range. This means that water vapor is already absorbing the majority of the radiation in these overlapping bands. Water vapor is vastly more abundant in the atmosphere than methane, with concentrations measured in parts per thousand (ppt) compared to methane's parts per billion (ppb). The dominance of water vapor absorption effectively "saturates" these overlapping wavelengths, leaving methane with only a minimal additional impact on the total radiative transfer. This is why slight increases in methane concentrations due to anthropogenic or natural emissions have a negligible effect on Earth's energy balance compared to the influence of water vapor. In summary, while methane is a greenhouse gas on a per-molecule basis, its contribution is limited by the overwhelming and already saturated absorption capabilities of water vapor in the same regions of the spectrum.

Medicare for All doesn’t compete with your insurance. It replaces it. Under RAND’s analysis, private health insurance spending goes to zero. No choice, long wait times, a bigger tax bill, and Washington in charge of your care.
NEW: Medicare for All is back on the ballot this midterm cycle. Behind the promises are fewer insurance choices, longer waits, and more power in Washington. Voters deserve to know what they’re being sold. Read our latest on the fine print. ⬇️

Billionaires in California are spending $333 million of their own money to protect their own money, which parasites like @SenSanders think belongs to him. Then he has the audacity to call it obscene. He is right that something here is obscene. It is that the men who hold up the world and produce the values that turned old fairy tales into ordinary life must now buy advertising for permission to keep what they made. Bernie cannot accept the simplest fact in economics. That money exists because they created something people chose to buy. It arrived through consent, one transaction at a time. Every dollar he has ever directed came the other way, taken by force from people who had no say. So notice the structure of his accusation. He names three things nobody is at war with, homelessness, cancer, child poverty, then charges murder against anyone who declines to fund his version of the cure. Refusing to hand over your property becomes wanting children dead. That is the oldest move in politics. Invent a victim, assign the guilt, collect the money. The men in his crosshairs built the labs, the drugs, the supply chains and the wealth that pays for every charity he has ever cited. He has built nothing, and spent 35 years explaining why that makes him the moral one.
Billionaires in California are spending $333 million to wage a war. Against what? Homelessness? No. Cancer? No. Child poverty? No. They’re waging war against a 5% billionaire wealth tax. They’d rather poor kids with cancer die than pay a little more in taxes. That is obscene.
