China's Communist Party opened its Fifth Plenum in Beijing this morning. Four days, behind closed doors (reported by the South China Morning Post, citing Xinhua).
First, my thesis, stated plainly so you can judge it for yourself. For two years I've watched the major powers clean house at the same time: Washington, Beijing, Moscow, New Delhi, Riyadh. Each does it in its own language and through its own systems. There's no single conductor, but they're all moving in the same direction.
Here is what's on the table this week, as reported. The top leader delivered the work report and walked the room through a single document on "deepening party self-governance." The stated focus is discipline: lavish dinners, gifts, vanity projects.
That's the polite version. Here's the backdrop. In January, China's second-ranking military officer and its chief of joint staff were placed under investigation. In August they were removed. In September, the Party expelled both of them, citing factions and promotions sold for money (reported by SCMP and The Star). Of the seven members of China's top military command elected in 2022, reporting says two remain: the chairman and one general.
Sit with that for a second. The body that commands the largest military on earth is, on paper, mostly empty chairs. The meeting that opened today is the one that writes the rules for who gets to fill them.
Why should you care in America? Two weeks from now, Washington and Beijing hit a cluster of deadlines on the trade truce, port fees and export controls. I'm not telling you the plenum is about those; adjacency isn't causation.

A large group of Amish builders from Ohio are spending the next FIVE MONTHS fixing homes damaged by Hurricane Helene for FREE in Western North Carolina and South Carolina.
There's just one problem... the Amish don't drive, so they need drivers to take them back and forth to job sites and drop off trailers (if you have a truck).

In the predawn darkness of October 16, Coast Guard rescue swimmer Josh Law was lowered from a helicopter into the Pacific about 140 miles west of Ensenada, off Mexico's Baja California peninsula. A boat had capsized, and more than two dozen people were scattered across the water. He couldn't see them, and over the noise of the helicopter he couldn't hear them. All he had to guide him was the searchlight from above.
Law was 24 years old and the only rescuer in the water. Fighting 8 foot waves for well over an hour, he swam from one survivor to the next, flipping each onto their back, towing them through the swells, and getting them into the rescue basket. As his dry suit slowly filled with water and exhaustion set in, he kept going. By the end, he had personally pulled 16 people out of the ocean.
Even on the flight to San Diego, his work wasn't done. He treated three survivors for serious wounds, including injuries the Coast Guard said were consistent with shark bites. Not everyone on board was found, and the Coast Guard has since ended its search.

I was never anti-vaxx, I was anti-covid-jab. That said, with all I've read and learned since covid, I now am anti-vaxx. If it needs a liability waiver, it is not safe and effective. The risk from the disease is less than the risk of severe harm or death from the vaccine pushed to prevent it.
