It's been 20 years since I qualified as a ref, so I may be out of touch, but having your feet on the ground used to be required when you took a throw in. Have the laws changed? Because I see this all the time and there's no excuse for an assistant ref not to spot it.

Who could have predicted that trying to ban protests would lead to more protests, eh? What a complete and unpredictable suprise.

With respect, we knew exactly how rubbish the Glazers would be. What we underestimated was how rubbish INEOS and the new mgmt would be. Been no better in terms of the football and miles worse with the fans.
"I think we all underestimate how rubbish the Glazers are." A scathing assessment of Manchester United's owners from @mjshrimper.

The collapse in violent crime over three decades has been one of the most striking developments of my lifetime. News is about what’s going wrong, and rightly so. But the bigger picture also matters From today’s figures:-

🇫🇷 French police have left protesters with injuries that human rights lawyers told outlets compare to those seen in conflict zones, as a student uprising over crumbling schools and the cost of living enters its fifth week. Over Saturday and Sunday alone, French outlets StreetPress, Index and ViolencesPolicières(dot)fr collected several hundred videos and testimonies. Cases they documented include: 🔸 A 17-year-old in Saint-Étienne whose hand was torn off by a police grenade 🔸 A 17-year-old girl in Mulhouse who lost the sight in her left eye after being hit by a tear gas grenade 🔸 Protesters in Paris, Lyon, Strasbourg and Besançon beaten with batons and kicked while on the ground, including one held in a chokehold France's police watchdog has opened at least 36 investigations into police violence against high school protesters. Christophe Calvao, president of the Paris Young Lawyers' Union, denounced "an increasingly systematic use of crowd-control measures that would normally be reserved for much more serious situations." Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez has said police "must be able to use all intermediate weapons," and on Tuesday vowed to "step up" for the next mobilization. France Unbowed leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon said his party and unions know how to keep marches peaceful by deploying hundreds of volunteers, adding: "We could at least expect police to do something other than fire indiscriminately into the crowd." Melenchon also noted that most European countries ban such grenades, and that Nuñez suspended them only to reinstate them "not even 48 hours" later. 🎥 Edited by @samivanderlip. Why are there so many riots in France? Why are the French riot police so violent? Well the questions answer each other. An excellent article here on why French police tactics are so appalling and ineffective, and why they have no interest in improving. theguardian.com/world/2026/o…

90 years ago today, Oswald Mosley and his Blackshirts attempted to march through and intimidate a predominantly Jewish area of the East End. Men, women and children, alongside local residents, trade unionists and anti-fascist protesters, came together to defend the community in what became known as the Battle of Cable Street. They taught us an important lesson: communities can resist fascism by joining together. Hate and antisemitism had no place in London then, and it has no place here now.

Ownership Matters: Football Must Put Integrity Before Wealth In recent days, MUST has been asked by a number of media organisations to set out our view following reports that Manchester City have been found guilty of the overwhelming majority – reportedly 114 out of 115 – of the Premier League charges brought against them. Manchester City continue to deny wrongdoing and are expected to appeal. They are entitled to do so. But if these findings are upheld, this cannot be dismissed as an accounting error or an accidental breach of complex rules. It would amount to industrialised cheating on an unprecedented scale. For years MUST has argued that ownership matters in football. At Manchester United we have seen one form of bad ownership: the Glazers loading the Club with enormous debt while extracting hundreds of millions of pounds through dividends, interest and associated costs. Manchester City cheated Premier League rules, the Commission found. Did it also cheat HMRC? We've examined the decision and leaked Mancini documents. We think City likely failed to pay £12m in tax. There should be a criminal investigation. Thread:

The question of the potential *criminal* liability for those involved in the financial fraud at MCFC is now finally starting to be raised. bbc.co.uk/sport/football/art…
Replying to @sportingintel
I would be very surprised if this saga did not end with criminal charges for some high-level mcfc employees. I suspect the coaches etc will be safe, but cooking the books for financial gain and the Fraud Act are not good bedfellows.

I don't follow this logic. Decriminalisation generally requires fewer police, not more. That is kind of the point.

"Our confidence in proving the club’s innocence is just as strong as when this began". That's an extremely odd statement in the circumstances and could mean anything. Why not just say, "we are innocent"?
