Former Professor of political science Alemayehu G. Mariam's Imperial Nostalgia and Refusal to Swallow Eritrean Sovereignty by Ghidewon Abay Asmerom (@Ghidewon) I recently came across two articles on X (formerly Twitter) that left me wondering whether the author was deliberately rewriting history or had become so entangled in his own contradictions that he could no longer distinguish between international law, imperial nostalgia, and wishful thinking. The author is Alemayehu G. Mariam, a former professor of political science at California State University, San Bernardino, who prefers to go by the Americanized name Al Mariam. IMPERIAL NOSTALGIA AND REFUSAL TO SWALLOW ERITREAN SOVEREIGNTY November 7, 2026 | By Ghidewon Abay Asmerom Al Mariam’s arguments fail both historical and legal scrutiny. Egypt has no authority to bargain away Eritrea’s sovereign coastline in exchange for Nile concessions. Nor can his inflammatory portrayal of Eritrean soldiers erase their assistance to Ethiopia’s Northern Command survivors. Imperial nostalgia cannot override historical truth, international law, or Eritrea’s sovereignty. @AbiyAhmedAli has openly admitted to spying on his own cabinet. Ethiopian authorities are notorious for spying on ordinary citizens and systematically targeting the political opposition. Now his government stands accused of spying on the United States, the same country that has poured billions in aid into Ethiopia. @AbiyAhmedAli’s spying obsession apparently makes no distinction between friend and foe. #Ethiopia #Eritrea #AbiyAhmed

Billions in foreign aid. Millions living under multidimensional poverty. Civilians dying in multiple conflicts. Yet Ethiopia's government is acquiring advanced Russian fighter jets and air-defense systems. When a nation depends on the world's generosity to feed its people, how does it justify prioritizing weapons of war? #Ethiopia #Eritrea

Even if #Ethiopia acquires 12 Su-35 4++ generation fighters and S-400 air-defense batteries, those weapons will neither resolve its internal conflicts nor give it a just cause for war against its neighbors. Everyone knows that invading other countries takes more than military hardware. #Eritrean-Ethiopian history, ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, and numerous other conflicts remind us that sophisticated weapons alone cannot guarantee victory. Courage, determination, and the conviction that one is defending and fighting for a just cause remain essential. What just cause does Abiy have for claiming #Eritrea’s and his other neighbors sovereign coastline? None. Ethiopia’s desire for access to the sea gives it no right to seize another country’s territory. Hubris cannot turn ambition into entitlement. Nor would these weapons make a confrontation with #Egypt, #SaudiArabia, #Somalia, #Sudan, or #Eritrea any less reckless. Ethiopia’s security and prosperity depend on peaceful relations with its neighbors. An arms package costing an estimated $4 billion would be a tragic misuse of resources while millions of Ethiopians need food. That money should feed families, rebuild communities, and give young people a future. #Ethiopians: your neighbors are not your enemies. This is not your war. Refuse to be drawn into @AbiyAhmedAli’s reckless adventure. Choose peace, dignity, and your children’s future. To the peace-loving people of #Oromia in particular: Abiy claims to act in your name. Make your voices heard: “Not in our name.” @KSAmofaEN @EgyptForeignMin @AlsisiOfficial @hawelti @EmbassyEritrea @HassanSMohamud @antonioguterres @ymahmoudali @Bankole_Adeoye @vonderleyen

@AbiyAhmedAli has openly pursued ambitions to invade #Eritrea & seize its coastline. Let’s call it what it is: a direct threat to a #sovereignty. Nothing more, nothing less. But history has a lesson for those who threaten to conquer the waters may ultimately drown in them. @USUN

When an ardent anti-Eritrean instigator unequivocally states the true facts about Eritrea’s sovereignty, you know that Abiy has lost all the reasons to support his war mongering campaign against Eritrea. I have disagreed with Martin Plaut for the past quarter of a century, but how can anyone disagree with him on this point? One point he emphasised, which deserves to be highlighted, is that, out of all the borders on the African continent, the #Eritrea–#Ethiopia border is among the most clearly defined, thanks to the 2002 boundary ruling, which both countries accepted as final and binding. He also makes it clear that #Assab is an #Eritrean port. There are many landlocked countries in the world, and that is simply a reality they have to live with. Eritrea has always allowed Ethiopia to use its territory for the transportation of goods, while #Ethiopia also relies on #Djibouti to import what the country needs. He goes on to say: “For some reason, Abiy has made building a navy one of his priorities. He claims that Ethiopia cannot exist without owning a seaport, and since he cannot build his navy on a lake, he wants to establish it in Assab or #Massawa. “But Eritrea is not a colony. It is an independent country, and he cannot do that.” @Reuters @AlArabiya_Eng @BBCAfrica @trtafrika @FRANCE24 @USEmbassyAddis @_AfricanUnion @antonioguterres

Again, we have consistently appealed to the international community that, the government in #Ethiopia is the sole reason of chaos in East Africa. In his recent vulgar speech, special adviser to @AbiyAhmedAli Mr @reda_getachew literally threatened “Bab Elmendeb” shipping line with an artillery stationed from Ethiopian border. @EU_Commission diplomat & @antonioguterres representative to Sudan Mr @Haavisto sat there & never corrected the vulgar language coming from Mr. Getachow. If the international community failed to understand the consequences of such vulgar & literally “terrorist style speech’s”, then, we are playing with lives of millions of innocent lives. @StateDept @SecRubio @WhiteHouse @EUSR_Weber @MFA_China @mfa_russia

Potemkin Party Officials (speech at 12th Tana Forum by Director of NSA) are invoking "increasing Red Sea militarization... and its consequences on maritime security" to argue for a "seat on the table for its stabilization". The unhealthy obsession/irony is too palpable to merit elaboration. This regime has been embroiled in, and has become the principal incubator, of the multiple and perennial internal conflicts that have gripped Ethiopia (Tigray, Amhara, Somali Regions etc.) for most of its relatively short incumbency. It continues to host a military base in the Beni-Shangul Gumuz Region in western Ethiopia for UAE sponsored military training camp; main conduit for mercenaries; and for launching Drone attacks against the Sudan. For more than three years now, it has declared an unprovoked war of aggression against Eritrea under the mantra of "sovereign access to the sea" and projection of "naval power" in the sovereign territorial waters of its neighbour. Its destabilizing act against Somalia is another dimension of its delusional pursuit of "regional grandeur" and insatiable appetite for the status of a "surrogate mini-hegemon" under the beck and call of other regional hegemons. This charade has to stop before it entails further regional chaos and turmoil! Time to tell the aspirant "mini-hegemon" to shed these hollow pipedreams and grapple with its intractable domestic agendas. Time to openly pronounce - as the saying goes - that "the Emperor has no clothes".

Thank you, Ambassador @FaqiAlis for the words of wisdom & statesmanship which the Ethiopian PM conspicuously lacking. @AbiyAhmedAli ’s pursuit of “sovereign” sea access through threats of #aggression is unjustifiable and contrary to international law. #Ethiopia has never been denied commercial #maritime access through peaceful agreements. Threatening to invade #sovereign neighboring countries serves neither the Ethiopian people nor regional peace, but the #UAE and its enablers’ #expansionist agendas across the #HornOfAfrica. #EritreaPrevails #Somalia #Sudan
The Horn of Africa has been in conflict for decades. Fighting continues inside Ethiopia, and Somalia remains fragmented and politically unstable. Ethiopia's claim of real economic concerns does not legally justify seeking sea access by force through Eritrea's Assab port or through any other port in the neighboring countries. Any such war will fail. It will only destabilize the region, cause massive human loss, and force many to flee their homes. Under UNCLOS, landlocked states must negotiate access bilaterally. No country has the right to take a portion of the sea by force. The 1998 to 2000 war between Ethiopia and Eritrea was disastrous and solved nothing. War has never brought a permanent solution and should be avoided at any cost. A conflict in the Red Sea would be very costly, as it could spread to the entire region. The countries of the Horn of Africa should unite to maintain their strategic relevance. Only with peaceful coexistence can these countries prosper.

All Eritrea has ever sought is a harmonious Horn of #Africa that controls its own destiny, resources, and security. Yet, time and again, #Ethiopia|n leaders serve external interests at the region’s expense. If weakening #Eritrea was impossible yesterday, it is even more so today.

መኸተ (Mekhäte) is more than struggle. It is the collective resolve to confront challenges, defend dignity, overcome adversity, and advance a shared purpose. 🇪🇷 Eritrea’s liberation spirit lives on when memory becomes responsibility, solidarity becomes action, and sacrifice becomes a commitment to the future. 🇪🇹 Ethiopian historical revisionism and irredentism continue to underestimate Eritrean resolve. Rather than learning from history and the failures of past regimes, those pursuing confrontation with Eritrea risk repeating its devastating costs—not least for Ethiopian lives and the Horn of Africa’s yearning for peace. Reading from a teleprompter on Ethiopia's TV yesterday, the Potemkin Party's Prime Minister disparages Eritrea's economic development, and particularly its manufacturing sector, as "stagnant and in decline" since its independence in 1991. The speech/interview was also laced with his three-year old threats of war of aggression and invasion unless Eritrea succumbs to his delusional projects of "sovereign access to the sea" and "Ethiopian naval presence" in Eritrea's coastal territory; packaged this time round in different pretexts, language, and format. To revert to his disparaging discourse on Eritrea's economic performance and potential: 1. In the past 35 years, Ethiopia was the beneficiary of a whopping 80-90 billion US dollars of international multilateral and bilateral assistance; 2. Ethiopia went through two rounds of WB sponsored debt-cancellation rounds, as well as repetitive financial bailouts from the IMF and other donors. For almost ten years in -between, Ethiopia's dire humanitarian conditions were alleviated by the international community under a customized "social safety net" and other similar "intensive care" financial antidotes. 3. The current regime itself has received over 30 billion US dollars in international assistance in the last 8 years alone. In addition, its tattering economy is being resuscitated by another IMF bailout programme to the tune of 3.1 billion US dollars. 4. And yet, as the figures below illustrate, more than 68% Ethiopians are living under extreme poverty while close to 30 million people require urgent humanitarian relief assistance at this point in time. 5. In as far as the 300 manufacturing plants that the PP leader alludes to, these were old factories built during Italy's colonization of Eritrea from 1889 until 1941. The British Military Administration dismantled many of those factories - including the dock in Massawa - as "war booty" and sold them to other foreign countries. The occupationist Haile Selassie regime, in its turn, dismantled many of the remaining factories and transferred them to Ethiopia especially during the imposed "Federation" period. 6. After its hard-won independence in 1991, Eritrea registered rapid economic growth in the first seven years (WB reports). Imposed wars and unwarranted sanctions thereafter naturally affected the pace and magnitude of its economic trajectory. 7. These externalities have nothing to do with Eritrea's open investment and economic policies and visions. 8. And in any case, Eritrea has the abundant economic endowments (blue economy, extractive industry, educated and industrious human capital, and a civilized culture that celebrates religious and ethnic diversity within robust national unity) to excel and achieve its aspirations of rapid and sustainable growth in a conducive and enduring regional climate of peace and stability. 9. Finally, Ethiopia itself could do much better, extricate itself from debilitating dependency, and use its abundant resources for real development if its leaders abandon sectarian policies of division and polarization that incubate perennial cycles of internal turmoil as well as intertwined acts of regional destabilization in pursuit of delusional and expansionist projects.
