SEE!!! this is exactly what I'm talking about. Go to businesses and rather than going "we will help you unionise" or something, they say "vote for us because we will raise minimum wage". A deep and pervasive psychic paralysis in the left today. Electoralism will not win long term
Fascinating organizing tactic by the @scott_colom field campaign to stop knocking doors and start organizing workers who weren't being reached through traditional methods
Kinda reminds me of Bernie with the meatpackers in Iowa
I think this and other cases are why I don't particularly think the US mid-terms are a victory for the left to be celebrated too strongly. The Mexican left came to power not because of electoralism, but because of strongly networked and powerful ground movements.
That people like Mamdani and El-Sayed have won are not the relevant metrics for success. Instead, what does the movement look like on the ground? How well networked is it? How defended against failure is it? On these terms I struggle to see the US left as anything but weak af.

The elite media absolutely never talks about how the Mexican left utterly crushed the corrupt narco-establishment in Mexico and instituted a wildly popular democratic socialist government that’s still going strong after eight years because they wouldn’t want to give you any ideas

Being right years ahead of others isn’t nearly as satisfying as people think. Nobody apologizes for treating you like a crazy. They just come back years later, repeating what you told them as if it’s some groundbreaking revelation because they finally heard it from someone else.

Don't forget, don't forgive, don't trust made-for-social-media repentance narrative arcs.
The price of freedom and equality is eternal vigilance, the eternal exercise of political intelligence.

You work hard to get your law degree. Your friends are mostly going into Big Law where they start out making $350k to help corporations rip people off. You want to make the world better, not worse, so you get a job at NRDC, making $70k to protect people and places from pollution. Then you see Matt Yglesias—the guy who cheered on the Iraq War and defended Biden’s senility and said the people of Minneapolis shouldn’t have protested ICE—use Halloween to argue that you’re the problem with our politics.
Spooky, indeed!

🧐🤔😎 It would be a terrible pity if the UK government's ban on climate academic and Palestinian supporter Prof Andreas Malm would cause lots of people to read this essay (and subscribe to the great @tribunemagazine ). Really tragic. Like, really, sad. Double plus ungood.
This is the essay the government doesn't want you to read.
Andreas Malm's overarching theory of the present — as an age of 'ultra-fossil' empire — in the new Tribune.
The rest of the issue isn't out yet, but we've released this early on our website:

A perfect example of two connected phenomena:
1. academia is NOT a meritocracy (the very idea, lmao)
2. the upper classes are the last class to have and enact real class solidarity, passing around cushy jobs to each other, not phased by any level of incompetence or corruption.
You can’t make this up. Minouche Shafik, the former @Columbia president who caved to hostile politicians in a disastrous hearing, called the NYPD onto her own campus, had students arrested by the hundreds, then resigned in disgrace, is now in charge of @LSEnews new forum for “democratic debate.”
Will she call the police on the debaters too?

There’s a pause after Mazzucato listens to the Tory yapping the cut, tax, cut, tax austerity mantra, when for a wonderful moment I thought she was going to say, “when you say ‘borrow’, do you mean your state subsidised interest earning gilt portfolio?”
Sadly…
“What I find very difficult… is the assumption you have to cut your way to be being fiscally responsible”
“There’s not a hope in hell that [Labour] are going to oversee any cuts to public spending”
Economics professor Mariana Mazzucato and Conservative MP Julia Lopez debate Chancellor John Healey’s spending plans.

I think it's worth saying that much of the UK's current of anti-porn legislation is being driven by terfs who have some really wacky conspiracy theories about porn turning people trans.

🤫😯 Never told story time re Prof Andreas Malm UK ban.
Spring 2025, students and staff at Uni Lausanne wanted to invite him to give a talk. Not just any talk: the last talk in the lecture series awarded to our dear Nobel laureate Jacques Dubochet climate advocate & activist.
1/x
The leading advocate for climate justice and Palestinian rights has been blocked from coming to the UK by the Home Office. Politicians, academics and writers have condemned this outrageous act of censorship.

Banning Andreas Malm makes perfect sense for the Burnham administration. He’s a leading climate scholar and a Palestine activist. In other words, he represents the two forces Burnham’s government is determined to crush: climate resistance and solidarity with Palestine.
This is outrageous, yet another moment of authoritarian statisation because the state’s involvement in genocide is indefensible.
The Home Office has blocked Andreas Malm from entering the UK.
Politicians, academics, writers and artists have condemned the decision.

This is a graph of prudent financial decision making. As you can see, in 2008, everyone started making really bad personal spending decisions, then they kinda started making better ones around 2020, now they are making bad spending decisions again.
