Tim Sweeney doesn't know that Steamworks works on other platforms via the web API.
It's literally what powers cross saves in games like Daemon X Machina for Nintendo Switch.
This has been a thing since Portal 2 on PS3.
Exactly this. Valve has held gaming back for years by locking developers’ PC games into Steamworks’ social walled garden where players can’t talk to other players on iOS, Android, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, or even other PC stores.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Nobody is forced to use Steamworks.
A lot of games use Steamworks only for authentication to allow for crossplay and do the rest themselves.

I'm so tired of people saying gaming is dying. Western AAA gaming is dying. Everyone else is fine. Nintendo and Capcom are putting out heat consistently and indies couldn't be healthier
Why a specific sport game, that you play on a field irl, needs an open world in th videogame version?
Honestly, I don't get it.

EA confirms they are developing an Open World football game and seemingly separate from Madden and College Football.
