Russia has built about 16 new elevated air-defense towers in a ring roughly 50 km around Vladimir Putin’s Valdai residence, bringing the total near the site to more than 50, according to a Radio Liberty investigation based on satellite imagery.
They are mostly on the ring’s southern side, facing Ukraine, and are spaced about 15 km apart.
The lattice structures are designed to lift short-range systems such as Pantsir or Tor above the tree line so they can hit low-flying drones and missiles.
The new ring also covers Khotilovo airbase, a backup airfield for Putin connected to the residence by a dedicated rail line, and Lisiy Island on the Vyshny Volochyok Reservoir, home to a classified laboratory.
Radio Liberty’s Mark Krutov and OSINT analyst @jembobineuse, who mapped the sites with Planet Labs imagery, say the count roughly doubled in six months.
The Valdai area, with fewer than 100,000 people within 50 km, now has about half as many such towers as Moscow and the surrounding region, which has about 100 for more than 20 million people.
The buildup follows Russian claims of Ukrainian drone attacks on the residence, which Kyiv denied.

So, according to the Ukrainian side, it was basically a setup. Ukrainian negotiators were invited to Miami only to be confronted with the fact that America is allowing Russian diesel back onto global markets and striking a deal to purchase millions of tons of it for itself. That essentially means billions of dollars flowing into the russian war machine.

Mykola ‘Makar’ Zinkevych, commander of the NC13 Unit, on how the new Gryphon tactic, which combines unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), basically ground robots, with drones, is changing military doctrine.
In January 2026, the unit began using heavy bomber drones to carry small kamikaze ground robots more than 15-20 kilometers (9.3-12.4 miles) deep behind Russian positions, release them from the air, and then continue the mission on the ground.
Their missions can include attacks on logistics, personnel, and staging areas, as well as reconnaissance and other forms of disruption.
The unit has already carried out more than 100 successful missions using this approach.
The technology has become an important part of Operation Vivaldi, a major Ukrainian counteroffensive that has liberated more than 176 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory from Russian occupation.

A Russian overnight missile strike destroyed an animal shelter in the Odesa region, setting the building and its enclosures ablaze.
At least three dogs and 10 cats were killed. The shelter’s head, Olha Shyliimina, described trying to save the animals as a second attack unfolded.
