A good thread from a teacher, on losing the battle for students' attention
I use to be on the team that's like, "Let kids bring phones into the classroom! We'll use them for learning!" The problem, and the reason I've changed my stance, is simply that the attention economy makes this nearly impossible. It's a losing battle for kids & their brain. 1/

Reading Don't Label Me by @IrshadManji and came across a good reminder. "Keep in mind that 'listening to' doesn't have to mean 'agreeing with.'"

The hallmark of an open mind is not letting your ideas become your identity. If you define yourself by your opinions, questioning them is a threat to your integrity. If you see yourself as a curious person or a lifelong learner, changing your mind is a moment of growth.

#starmanning in practice: 1. Restate their argument in a way they'd agree with. 2. Locate and explicitly acknowledge the fundamental human desires motivating them, and how you share those desires. 3. Use "We" language, rather than "Us vs. Them" language, when disagreeing.

According to @BretWeinstein & @HeatherEHeying, “[T]he modern world is out of sync with our ancient brains & bodies.” That’s why, despite greater prosperity, humans are less at peace. I agree & explain.👇🏽 (Can’t wait for their new book!) @munkdebate podcasts.apple.com/us/podcas…

“We are all smarter when we have a more diverse inner crowd, which we can achieve by cultivating a cognitively diverse outer crowd. But that involves engaging with people we disagree with, an activity that, in truth, most people do not do naturally.” 👏👏👏

The clearest sign of intellectual chemistry isn't agreeing with someone. It's enjoying your disagreements with them. Harmony is the pleasing arrangement of different tones, voices, or instruments, not the combination of identical sounds. Creative tension makes beautiful music.

Three cheers for teachers who respect unorthodox perspectives about identity.👇🏽Bear in mind: “Respect” does not mean “agree with.” It means “engage with.” Which is what education is all about.
This is one of my favorite nonfiction books in my school library and I recommend it to students ALL the time.

Fantastic @trinityforum conversation between @JonHaidt and @Peter_Wehner — talking about “machloket l’shem shamayim” (see next tweet) and quoting @nytdavidbrooks (as he channeled JS Mill). Also Pete mentioned the 💗 concept of “2nd friends.” (More here👇) psychologytoday.com/us/blog/…
