Why should a pensioner on a £13K income be exempt from income tax when a person of working age is not? Those of working age do not receive free travel or all sorts of other discounts to which pensioners are entitled. We do not exempt people from tax based on how many dependents they have, or how much housing in their area costs, so why exempt individuals based on age?
John Healey, the chancellor, is expected to announce a 3.9 per cent rise to the full state pension while protecting those on lower incomes from income tax thetimes.com/uk/politics/art…
Very much matches what we hear in focus groups with young people, this sense of feeling numb both by how hard it is to get a job and dispiriting applications, but also feelings of precarity in jobs.
"It makes you question the effort you put in."
After applying to more than 115 jobs, graduate Anna describes her experiences of the "demoralising" job market and frustration of being left in a "void of no feedback".

Alcohol, being disinhibiting, allows people to build trust between and have fun with each other when they wouldn’t be able to do so soberly. It helps to temporarily level status hierarchies and allows more social risk-taking, which is why people often meet future lovers when they’re drinking and drink when building relationships. People can be silly together when drinking, and people who aren’t ever silly are to my mind more prone to collective fanaticism.
There is a time and place for sobriety - work and time with children especially - but alcohol underpins a lot of the social interactions that make trust-based civilization possible.

A Lib Dem MP writes: "When part of Charlie Maynard's complaint is we're not getting the coverage we want, timing his letter to drop on a morning when every single headline was about the implosion of the Greens seems like self-flagellation."

Confirmed: Lib Dem Treasury spokesperson Charlie Maynard resigned this morning (as reported first by @PickardJE).
There's been a big row in the Lib Dem WhatsApp group over the move - and talk of a showdown at next Tuesday's parliamentary party meeting.
Daisy Cooper, the Lib Dem deputy leader, has quickly moved to back Davey, in a bid to quell any further leadership manoeuvring.
She says in a statement: "The vast majority of our MPs support Ed, want him to lead the party into the next election, and are furious at this distraction."
She adds: "We Liberal Democrats are the last line of defence against a Reform UK government, and Ed is determined to lead a strong and united party into the next general election whenever it comes.
"As Ed said at conference we are in the fight of our lives against the right who want to turn our country into their version of Trump's America."

I'm so sad for @andree_frieze that she's left @TheGreenParty - it was her home, her family. She's been a committed campaigner for years and a very well-respected councillor in Ham and Petersham for 8 years. Despite our party differences, we were friends.
The Green Party is now antisemitic andreefrieze.substack.com/p/…

NEW: The Greens are facing international ostracism after adopting a policy declaring zionism as a form of racism, which has drawn dismay from group representing European Greens.
Separately, the co-leader of the German Greens said the policy was “intolerable and unacceptable”, running contrary to its belief in the right of Israel to exist.

Raising the tax-free personal allowance. Trusting people to spend their own money, not telling them the state knows best.
Real money, £680 a year, back in people’s pockets.

For goodness’ sake - are we really cancelling an investment summit because of Burnham’s tiresome ‘not in London’ policy? This is unbelievably trivial in the middle of a chronic productivity crisis.
Exclusive: Downing Street is delaying a flagship investment summit penciled in for December by Sir Keir Starmer, with Andy Burnham keen for the event, which will seek to attract billions of pounds from investors, to take place outside London next year. news.sky.com/story/burnham-t…

Patrick Stillman is the Liberal Democrat candidate for Holborn & St Pancras.
The people of Holborn & St Pancras deserve better than politicians using the constituency as a personal platform.
Patrick will focus on what matters: the cost of living and housing.
Something interesting in the fact that imo the two most successful social campaigns in the UK recently (and which reversed course of an issue that seemed to be going one way) are on the socially conservative or status quo side
- Assisted Dying
- Gender identity/sex based rights

I am sure those who have run Scottish Education since 2000 had good intentions. No-one sets out to harm children and destroy their futures. But they have done just that. They need to acknowledge that, repent of error, come to England, see what works, and change course.
