Hello everyone, I need your feedback on something we're building at BIT.
Next week, we are launching admissions for our 2027 intake at bit.ac.zw.
BIT is a tuition-free vocational college in Bikita, Zimbabwe, training software engineers.
The Challenge
- There is a shortage of skilled software engineers.
- Can we train job-ready software engineers in just 12 months?
- Can we do it with AI and no human instructors?
- Can we scale to 1 million software engineers across Africa in 10 years?
Here's the plan:
1. Selection
- Online entrance exam with 6 games testing logical thinking, problem-solving and the ability to learn quickly.
- First intake: 100 students (20 on-site in Bikita, 80 online).
2. Learning by Building
- Coding from day one.
- 150 coding assignments.
- 30 mini projects.
- 5 enterprise-grade applications.
- 4 team projects, one every 3 months.
3. Learning Platform
- Self-paced, competency-based learning.
- Automated assessment of coding assignments.
- Students must pass a live AI video interview on their completed coding projects to progress.
- No human teachers or tutors.
4. Financial Support
- 100% tuition-free.
- $50 monthly stipend from month 4.
5. Employment
- Guaranteed job offers through our local and international employer partners.
- Employers pay BIT for each successful placement.
6. Long-Term Goal
After validating the model with our first cohort, we aim to train 1 million software engineers across Africa over 10 years.
My ask:
What are we missing? What would you change to make this model work? Can it produce software engineers you'd actually want to hire?
If this experiment fails, I hope someone else can learn from it, improve the model and build something better.

Last week in Cologne I showed how you can use the GitHub Copilot App and Foundry to build an agent you can deploy across Teams, Outlook or an app of your choice.
I also showed how you can integrate our new Decision 1 model for intent classification. I'm interested in agents that can recognise intent and then take action independetly if they decide they can be helpful, so this was fun to show!

damn, this is the most natural sounding AI model i've heard
We believe voice is the most natural way to interact with intelligence, so we created Dessa, the most authentic full-duplex speech model ever built. Talking with it feels like talking with a person…full of emotion, nuance, pauses, and a natural cadence.
