Keith's note: Making sure that #astrobiology is embedded in everything @NASAScience_ is good.
BUT - Diluting the visibility and identity of #astrobiology at @NASA and cutting education opportunities is bad.
Meanwhile - internationally - Astrobiology is on the rise. #IAC2026

Gee, this is a great way to make people in the aviation and space community think that Alabama is a great place for #SpaceAcademy when a sitting senator and Gubernatorial candiate says wacko stuff like this.
🤡 @SenTuberville: “Many airline pilots, flight attendants, air traffic controllers are part of the furry community”
Y’all — what is happening? How are Republicans really like this? Is this real life?
Keith Cowing retweeted
Oh noes @SenTuberville lookit what astronauts @SenMarkKelly and his brother @StationCDRKelly did in outer space - there are furry astronauts too! Oh then there's those furry Alabama Mascots. When will this furry madness end? You are our only hope, Tommy.
FYI for those of us whose families have suffered though this .... #Alzheimers

#AbGradCon Outreach Hints -- Astrobiology.com Editor’s note:
The prime reason for being at AdGradCon - Astrobiology Graduate Conference - (abgradcon.org/) is to focus on – AbGradCon. But, as you know, sharing what you have learned, your enthusiasm for the topic, and your interest in helping advance the discipline of Astrobiology are also important. As you post things (and you should) on social media using some basic hashtags will help interested parties see what is happening and also will help people like me to find and then re-broadcast things to much wider audience.
As such, IMHO if you put #AbGradCon #Astrobiology tags on your pictures and posts you’ll be using terms most likely to get people’s attention. Other tags (in addition) can help further refine your reach – but using #AbGradCon #Astrobiology makes it easy for your postings to reach the widest possible audience (and help me find your stuff).
I will be more than happy to post or link to anything you wish to write after the event – observations, contact information, positions sought – whatever. You can reach me at kcowing - at- astrobiology.com -- Keith Cowing, editor.

This @Apple #iPhone ad opens with a Artemis II pic saying "Once you've gone to the Moon where do you go next?" The undeniable coolness of Space is used to promote a global brand. This product placement only happened because of a multi-billion dollar @NASA mission. Yet no one at NASA thought to get #NASA or its logo featured? Really? Missed opportunity - in the extreme.

Rich Cooper has posted a poignant remembrance of 9-11 and his personal and NASA connections to that day.
"Several weeks ago as part of a separate writing project (Full Circle: A Journey of Flags, Heroes, Remembrance, and Friendship), I ventured into my basement and pulled out some of my old notebooks and files from my time working at NASA. One of those notebooks was a daily chronicle of everything happening in my job. I was looking for notes and details related to the September 11th attacks and the months that followed. In doing so, I discovered an old file folder aptly titled, “September 11,” and to my surprise found a more formal account of my memories and reflections that I had forgotten I had written."

Keith's note: The 9-11 anniversary dialed up all of the angst that is my life in America 25 years later. We seem to have learned nothing. Alas, my daily escape is best seen in this #AI video on Facebook. Everyday I spend quality time looking for #astrobiology news about life in the universe. And I go to this place for a while. And I watch @StarTrek đź––.
As we head into possibly darker times, few things seem to speak to us from a hopeful future more than space exploration - that thing @NASA does better than anyone else. As #NASA builds out the #SpaceAcademy I hope more than politics drives it and that it is designed to reach everyone in America with an interest in science and exploration. Better yet, that NASA and this educational effort can inspire such interests where someone seeks a purpose in life.
Done properly, such a Space Academy can exert global soft power - powered by NASA's potent reach - one that clearly demonstrates our nation's true character.

Red Begonias, Blue Skies, and 9-11
nasawatch.com/2024/09/11/red…
I first posted this on 10 Sep 2011. I used to run through the precise place where the plane hit the Pentagon when I lived across the street at Riverhouse III (I moved to Reston in 1990). Eric Sterner lived a few blocks away. Bill Readdy’s friend lived in the same building as I did and watched this happen out his window. And Lon Rains was in traffic and saw this unfold with his own eyes. Two people from my town of Reston did not come home that day. Had I been looking up I could have seen the plane in the sky over our house. A few hours after the attack someone in Reston decided to put up an American flag on the pedestrian overpass a few blocks from our house. It was a flag with only 48 stars. An antique. It was all that they could find on such short notice. Through all these years two haunting color images remain in my mind: some red begonias in a window at the Pentagon and that achingly blue September 11th sky. We have one of those blue skies today. Remember. — Original posting below. #911Remembrance

FWIW @NASA already has 2 programs with a phenomenal domestic/international impact. But they operate separately. Throwing an #Artemis Accords x NASA Space Apps collaboration into the mix could turbocharge @NASA's #SpaceAcademy / #StarfleetAcademy 'reach' @NASAAdmin

ICYMI New Horizons faces some instrument shutdowns for lack of only $2 million.
New Horizons plans to shut down both key heliophysics instruments for a lack of $2 million per year starting in FY 2027. A petition has been established to bring this to wider attention and add back this funding. change.org/p/heliophysics-co…
New Horizons is fully operational as it reaches the outskirts of our solar system and is headed to enter #interstellar space. America is the only nation to have spacecraft traversing interstellar space - the 1970s' Voyager twins. But they are barely operating. But New Horizons is headed join them.
New Horizons is a 21st century spacecraft with more modern scientific instruments that can better our solar neighborhood in a way that no other mission, Voyager included, will be able to do for many years to come.
NASA talks about maintaining leadership in space well this is one way to do so - to literally go where no one has ever gone before.
