The reading situation is so bad we need to start taking any victory we can get, no matter how small. If FanFic is the only thing we can get people to read, that's still preferable to not reading at all

We don't need to "fix" Harry Potter - @MichaelFKane is right. But the rest of you creatives need to write stories with Malfoid-like characters in it because there's obviously a huge supply problem!
I think all the folks out there saying that Malfoid 'fixes' Harry Potter are overshooting the target a bit. Harry Potter's intended audience is middle grade. Middle grade audiences don't really need high drama, will they won't they romances with oodles of yearning.
Listen guys. J.K. Rowling hit her target so squarely on the head so hard that she has swimming pools of money. Maybe even literally.
I know a lot of you grew up reading it (I didn't. I've admitted that) and still love it. But the thing is, you're not middle grade readers any more so your tastes and opinions on fiction have changed since then.
Malfoid changes the target audience and genre. Malfoid probably would NOT have made J.K. Rowling eleventy billion dollars.
It's true.
So have your fun. Enjoy the cultural moment. (Especially the screams of the lefties that abandoned Potter and are feeling left out right now) But maybe realize that Joan knew what she was doing and who she was writing for. 😅

Sullen himecut goth Goyle, Crabbe unchanged or at least made less stupid early on. Crabbe simp for Malfoid early on, Goylefoid quietly simp for Crabbe and quietly building seethe at Malfoid despite being friends with her. Minions become couple later on. You get all the boxes tick

Unpopular opinion in this community, but outside of the top 1% of authors I don't think it's wise to share your sales numbers
People want to buy things that are popular. Demonstrating that your book isn't only hurts both you and it
In this one thing TradPub has it right

Clever people realized very early in the indie fiction game that the real customers are authors and not "readers."
It's easier to sell one service to a naive new author than thousands of copies of a book in a saturated and disinterested market.
$.06 a word at 80k words is $4,800
If an indy book sells at $3.99 on amazon at 70% royalty, that is $2.79 per order.
It would take 1,720 orders to about break even with just the cost of that copy edit.
That is before a cover, any advertising, etc.
Assume spending for ads and cover etc would likely exceed that over say a year.
Again, even traditionally published books on average sell easily under 1000 copies lifetime.
So...
The math doesn't math.
We all hope we are the unicorn best seller, and it is worth trying and even losing if you can afford to, but once you start getting to tens of thousands just to publish the book, it is worth recognizing that the median household income in the US is around $80k gross.
Take out taxes and necessities, and if someone's whole family lived on just ramen, they would have to save decades to publish a single book, if ever.

40 years old today. I can't make the numbers add up. Pretty sure I'm still 12 in my head.
Buy some books from my website while they are on sale today and help me celebrate. 🤣
Okay it's my 40th birthday tomorrow and I can do what I want.
Order After Moses books from my website by tomorrow night and get $1.50 off. Paperback, hardback, E-book, and audio.
Also if you get the paperback, I'll sign it, which I don't normally do. Discount applies automatically at checkout and will apply to multiple items, so if you wanted to buy a copy of After Moses for a 12 year old nephew that reads, now is a good time to grab an extra copy. (hint, hint) 😁
(Already discounted bundles and scratch and dents don't apply this time, so this sale is best for someone starting their collection or continuing it.)
Anyway link below!

This might feel nice and fuzzy, but it's actually harmful
Amazon knows when you download a book but don't read it, and Authors with lots of downloads but no reads get de-listed in search
Appreciate the intentions, but when you do this you're actively hurting that person

Most people who call themselves writers are bad writers. Many of us can identify the majority of bad writers but aren't brave enough to say so because our communities are propped up by codependent style positive reinforcement.
This leads to a large amount of Dunning-Kruger effect where the good writers don't trust positive feedback and the bad ones think they are good.
In summary. If you think you are a good writer... You probably aren't.

“Just let the quality sort for itself” is also not an answer. Conservatives have been coping with that tagline for years now, and it’s obvious the cream is not rising to the top of the algorithm.
Anyone who’s dealt with this knows what I’m talking about.

There are currently three factions in what was the free speech coalition
1) Purists: They believe free speech is more important than any other consideration
2) Partisans: They believe in free speech for me, but not for thee. It’s OK when we do it, but not when you do it.
3) Game Theoreticians: Free speech as a stable equilibrium…advocate for "tit-for-tat" reciprocity to deter abuses, recognizing that without symmetric consequences, the powerful will always suppress the powerless, eroding norms for all
The Game Theoretician isn't a fencesitter; they're a strategist playing the long game. They champion free speech as the optimal Nash equilibrium in a polarized democracy, where everyone benefits from open discourse, but they know ideals alone don't enforce it
Once the norms have been broken, history shows that without credible threats of retaliation, the dominant side will always tilt the board: think the left's deplatforming waves post-2016 (e.g. Alex Jones' bans) or the right's current pushback after Charlie Kirk's assassination last week, like calls for Kimmel’s suspension
The key insight? Asymmetry breeds abuse. If the right now abstains from "taste of their own medicine" tactics (boycotts, firings, or regulatory nudges) the left learns zero cost for future censorship when they regain power
Enter deterrence: a calibrated tit-for-tat, where violations trigger proportional responses. This isn't vengeance; it's vaccination. It forces empathy through experience, making both sides internalize that free speech should be sacrosanct
And so it is possible to still be on the side of free speech, while also using this opportunity to call out the hypocrisy of the left because they are the ones who broke the system
In other words: I want free speech for all, but I also don’t wanna be a sucker and have to face censorship again when the left comes into power. Therefore, I’m going to take this moment in time to criticize the left and call out their hypocrisy, while taking my time in coming around to criticizing the right for doing the same because I’m approaching this problem in terms of game theory and while I share the purist’s objective, I think this is a better way to achieve it. Because shaming the left or appealing to morality or principles sure didn’t work one bit!

I've talked before about how quickly the premise of After Moses developed.
The benevolent super AI that lifts us up and then disappears without wanting gave me both the central mystery of the setting and the technology level I wanted to write.
Which immediately led to main character being. Clint Eastwood esque wandering gunman. Give him a spaceship and a crew.
I started writing the first chapter the day after and never looked back.
Audiobook kickstarter is soon, but it's already recorded and will release this year alongside thr 6th and final book.
Also bk 1 is on sale with the Based book sale right now and I need to post on that...
Busy times and a lot of cool stuff coming soon. 😎

After Moses has one of the most interesting post-apocalyptic settings I've read.
The AI that made humankind multiplanetary is gone, and no one knows how to replace it, but the factories still work, for now....

Want me to interview you?
There are two types of videos that do well on my channel: 1) screaming tirades about publishing nonsense and 2) interviewing amazing authors, creators, and service providers with interesting things to say.
With that in mind, I'm putting out a call. If you would like to be interviewed for The Nonsense-Free Editor YouTube channel, I'd like to hear from you. But take a minute to read the (short)⬇️ thread FIRST
