Gonna honestly comment on this - I think it’s less racism and more economic stereotyping.
Crypto is insanely trust based for a supposedly trust-less ecosystem. In a PvP zero sum meta, you need to bet that your counterparty is here for the longer term than you.
This means assuming they will not take liquidity before you. A guy who is ostensibly worth 10m USD is less likely to rug 10k than a guy that looks like he’s worth less than 50k USD. That’s why trading KOLs all pretend to be rich even if they are not.
Nobody trusts an 8 fig Chinese whale or Arthur Hayes to be long term aligned but you assume they will at least dump on your head after making at least 6-7 fig profit, allowing you to ride their project in the short term until they come close to their exit point.
Third world citizens or people who look third world simply suffer from the impression that they are likely to exit the position for less, because a smaller amount of money is life changing for them, a thesis which is not unreasonable.
The racism in crypto has gotten genuinely disgusting.
The degen/memecoin side of the industry has normalized this shit to a level I've never really seen anywhere else.
This also isn't just harmless internet banter. I've worked with hundreds of founders and spoken to a lot of ecosystem leads, and I've heard countless stories of founders deliberately hiding where they're from because they know they'll be stereotyped, treated differently, or have their startup dismissed before anyone even looks at what they're building.
Crypto was supposed to be an open and accessible place. Unfortunately, it's gotten to a point where I can't think of many industries more toxic.
We're doing a terrible job of living up to the ideals we claim to believe in.
