If I listened to the red team, I'd hate and fear immigrants and worry about the future. If I listened to the blue team, I'd hate and fear billionaires and worry about the future. But when I listen to the immigrants and the billionaires, I mostly hear them working to make their own lives better, and in the process improving things for all of us.

The difference is the point of mathematics isn't to solve the problem. Nobody is saved by proving some theorem in algebra. The point is to push forward the understanding of the field as a whole with innovative techniques. AI tells us yes or no, but that was never the point.

Notice how the headlines work. A Toyota crashes: "Driver injured in crash." A Ford crashes: "Two cars collide on highway." A BMW crashes: "Accident on Route 1." A Tesla crashes: "TESLA crashes." Not the driver. Not "a car." The brand, in the headline, every single time. Millions of crashes happen on the roads every year, and almost none come with a brand name. But when it's a Tesla, legacy media suddenly cares which car it was. Meanwhile, Tesla publishes its own safety data every quarter. With Autopilot engaged, Teslas go far more miles between crashes than the US average. That's not journalism. That's a campaign. The cars keep getting safer. The headlines just keep getting louder.

Many of the things that make a country rich are invisible.  You can’t see or touch property rights, the rule of law or the ease of doing business. That makes them easy to overlook. People talk about natural resources, but pay much less attention to whether ordinary people can start and run businesses without facing senseless rules and regulations. People are much more willing to invest when their property is protected and the same rules apply to everyone, including politicians. If you’re afraid an official could take your land or shut down your business, you’re going to think twice before risking your savings. A country can have plenty of natural resources and still make it hard for its people to prosper.

At the very very least: If you think she didn’t get the joke… Isn’t it remarkable that Holmes presented as a genius in every high-stakes encounter in which counterparties needed to believe in her genius … and then, after being caught, presented as an idiot in every context in which pretending to be an idiot would be convenient? Isn’t that kind of interesting?

If, by the way, the same situation that just happened in Brazil had happened but with the parties switched -- if Bolsonaro had won last night's election and then a pro-Bolsonaro judge sent the Federal Police to seize Lula's passport and bar him from leaving the country -- every major western media outlet and liberal NGOs would be screaming about the authoritarian attack on Brazil's elections and the destruction of basic freedoms.
One day after Lula was declared the winner of Brazil's elections, his opponent -- Sen. Flavio Bolsonaro -- just had had his passport seized by the Federal Police. Theose police were sent by notorious tyrant Judge Alexandre de Moraes. What a lovely democratic image.

For all these "AI will solve biology" I propose a simple exercise: identify functions of DUFs. Extra point: take a DUF without experimental structure.

Imagine a horde of people clinging to a flotilla of makeshift rafts. Some of the rafts are more seaworthy than others, due in large part to how each has been constructed and maintained. The worst rafts are crowded, floundering and near failure. People on the most seaworthy rafts can be divided into three basic "teams" based on what they think should be done about this: One team wants to invite the people from the failing rafts to the seaworthy rafts and encourages them to bring their raft maintenance traditions, even if this ultimately means sinking all the rafts and drowning everyone. Another team wants to defend the seaworthy rafts, repelling any refugees and leaving them to their fates, using whatever force is necessary. If this is insufficient, they are even willing to consider throwing some people off, to save the raft. And the third team wants to understand what makes rafts seaworthy, build more and better rafts, and teach anyone who cares how to maintain their own rafts. Guess which team is almost universally vilified.

In addition to documentaries perhaps NOT portraying 100% total objective truth, has anyone considered that this MAY be true for: reality TV, biographies, autobiographies, first person essays, essays on anything, the news from any news source, and all accounts of history? Anyone??

The Right’s lack of support for Ukraine is utterly disgraceful, from Trump all the way down. And it’s not just lack of sufficient support, it’s the ongoing poisonous narrative that Ukraine is the aggressor, Zelensky is a dictator, Russia is misunderstood, and Putin is an ally.

People assume that technology, once seized, will keep operating the same way it did under the engineers who built it. It will not. Those who have never built anything treat technology as lifeless objects that can simply be taken. The moment they do, what they hold is no longer living technology. It is a corpse that begins to rot.

A somewhat common but strange response to the consumer request for AI disclosures on products is to suggest that if you did this, you should have to disclose all sorts of other things (how many people worked on the product, what other software you used, what hardware it was made on, etc.) I can understand that some people don't like the idea of having AI disclosures, so they immediately try to think of arguments against it. But respectfully, this one makes no sense. Product labeling requirements are driven by demand, either from consumers or from competitors. There is no significant cross-section of the public asking to know if a game was made on machines with AMD or Intel hardware. There is no significant cross-section of the industry demanding that their competitors list whether or not they used Adobe Premier. Product labeling is not about giving you a complete set of information about how a product was made. It's about giving the consumer information that a significant number of them might want to know before making a purchase. Which ones of these get codified can be driven by consumer demand, competitor demand, or - most commonly - a combination of the two. This is not weird. It's good, actually. And it's especially good if an industry takes proactive steps to voluntarily label their products accurately, because then they avoid the inevitable alternative, which is that the consumer demand for the missing labeling produces a political movement which ends with mandatory labeling designed by a political body.

I remember sitting around a campfire shortly after the Ukraine war had just started with some Ukrainian friends. They shared that after they learned that Russian forces were jamming all communications they called Elon begging for Starlink support. Elon and the Starlink team instantly dropped everything they were working on, loaded a private jet with as many Starlink terminals as they could (terminals were in short supply at the time), and started flying the jet eastward while writing code to make terminals work over Ukraine. There was no contract or promise of payment for doing so, and no time to solve for that. My Ukrainian friends believed this saved the nation of Ukraine, and that without this effort Ukraine would have lost the war nearly instantly.
