For a cohort of well-intentioned liberals their actual ideology ‘in their heads’ is something closer to a utopian ‘Star Trek Liberalism’ vision rather than what you often see when the ideas are put into practice. It’s a compelling vision, easy to see why people are attached to it

BREAKING: Renewed US and Israeli strikes on Iran appear "likely" after US Midterm elections without a last-minute deal, with coordination talks currently underway, per Axios.
Such an operation is expected to include a week of "massive strikes" on Iranian leadership, energy, nuclear, and infrastructure targets, US and Israeli officials say.

One advantage Stubb has is familiarity with the specific peace process Putin is demanding. During the Winter War, Finland sued for peace and negotiated under fire - the war did not end until the Moscow Peace Treaty was signed, at which point Helsinki ceded roughly 10% of its territory. The process was: negotiate while the war is still active, accept the terms, sign, and only then does the fighting stop.
Ukraine and the West are currently demanding the opposite: a ceasefire first, then negotiations, all while rearming in the interim. Finland spun the outcome as a national victory - the "Miracle of the Kalevala" - and Ukraine will likely try to do the same.
By March 1940, Finland was militarily defeated. Stalin could have annexed the country or made it a Soviet satellite, as he did with the Baltics that same year. Instead, he only modestly escalated his pre-war territorial demands - taking Vyborg and the Karelian Isthmus in full rather than a 30 km buffer, and dropping the land swap Finland would have received in return - while preserving Finnish sovereignty. The terms were punitive but not maximalist.
That restraint was a security failure. By preserving Finnish sovereignty rather than neutralizing the country, Stalin created the condition for Finland to ally with Nazi Germany in 1941 and fight alongside Hitler's armies. Collaborationist Finnish forces advanced to the 1939 border, severed the last rail line into Leningrad, and proposed joint naval operations on Lake Ladoga to strangle the city's supply routes. The result was the starvation of up to a million Soviet civilians.
The same logic applies now: a sovereign Ukraine embedded in NATO's security architecture does not permanently end the war - it converts a ceasefire into the staging ground for the next one, with a NATO-backed army on Russia's western border and with once again a Finnish northern flank. From Moscow's perspective, the 1940 lesson is unambiguous: failure to neuter a defeated enemy on your border is an invitation to further death and destruction.
So Stubb's best-case scenario is a repeat of the Treaty of Moscow: Ukraine maintains the sovereignty needed to fight another day in exchange for territorial concessions, and the outcome is spun domestically as a Ukrainian victory.
On the other hand, Putin's job is to impose the Ukrainian version of the post-WW2 policy of "Finlandization" - permanent geopolitical neutering, with limited economic sovereignty as the concession that keeps the population from rebelling. The two outcomes may look similar on the map. The primary difference being whether the defeated country can one day soon remerge as a military threat.
The President of Finland, Alexander Stubb, is the most likely candidate to be the EU's representative in potential negotiations with Russia regarding the resolution of the Ukrainian crisis, according to "Berliner Zeitung."
"His advantage over other candidates is that he has good relations with the President of the United States, Donald Trump, which is why it is believed that his participation in the negotiations would reduce the risk of conflict between Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky," the article states.

I purposely ignored the Brazilian because I find the premise known as "Brazilian democracy" to be a funny joke....but it also allowed me to run a simple experiment: What if I ignored the election, avoided media reports on it, and simply relied on what I saw on this app?

🔽 Everything we are seeing points in this direction.
Interesting take from Ukrainian Telegram channel "Woman with a Braid" on recent diplomatic developments:
According to rumors circulating behind the scenes, the primary objective of Witkoff’s talks with Putin is not, in fact, the prospect of ending the war in Ukraine. Instead, the U.S. and Russia have begun discussing what kind of relationship they might build with one another, independent of any settlement regarding Ukraine.
The economic interests of Washington and Moscow have not vanished because of the war. Both sides are finding opportunities for cooperation even now, and the Ukrainian issue is no longer the sole condition for their dialogue.
Far more significant than the compliments exchanged during the meeting is the mention of peace proposals that could be reviewed at a later stage. Proposals put forward by Kyiv and various European capitals play no role in shaping the substance of the current negotiations; they are, at best, peripheral—and this is not simply due to skepticism on the part of the Russian Federation.
Acting in their own interests, the U.S. has concluded that there is little point in engaging through Zelensky—who remains firmly entrenched in power—and that Trump is far more interested in trade and economic cooperation. The U.S. has signaled its intent to develop relations with Russia; the diesel deal is merely the beginning. Trump is attempting to convey a similar message to Zelensky: agree to peace, and Ukraine will see investment. Zelensky, however, is unwilling to end the war, as his own grip on power depends upon its continuation.
The visit of a Chinese representative to Moscow, occurring immediately after the meeting with Witkoff, adds another dimension. It is likely that a potential summit between the leaders of the U.S., Russia, and China was discussed. The very prospect of addressing Ukraine alongside issues like Iran and other international concerns shifts the scale of the diplomatic agenda.
For Kyiv, this presents a fundamental problem: the principle of "nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine" is little more than a pleasant-sounding phrase. High-level politics is not built on promises. While Zelensky seeks a central seat at the negotiating table, Washington and Moscow are gradually expanding the table itself—incorporating issues of trade, security, and mutual interests. In this context, a deal involving diesel fuel could prove more significant than yet another diplomatic statement: it would demonstrate that the U.S.-Russia relationship is capable of evolving even before the war has ended.

@SamoBurja predicted that 'every country in the world with a GDP per capita higher than Mexico to be 2-5% Indian demographically within the decade'. Looks like the bar might be even lower.
The only hope is an expedited break through in affordable humanoid robots fit for mass adoption. Will most likely happen in China within 2 decades. Illiberal countries can at least easily remigrate Indians and replace them with robots at that point. Liberal countries will probably be stuck with unemployed Indians.

More evidence for the argument that in the C21st unless you deliberately make anti-immigrationism your nation’s main raison d’etre all incentives are aligned to funnel migrants into your country anyway. If you only off-handedly oppose it you still start slowly turning into Canada
