Did you know many molecules appear as two different mirror image forms that have different chemical and biological effects? This year's chemistry laureate Kenso Soai designed the first chemical reaction in which only one of the potential mirror images was formed. Other than life itself, no one had previously achieved this feat. The reaction, that has been named the Soai reaction, is one of the most spectacular chemical experiments ever conducted. Thanks to Soai and his co-laureate Henri Kagan, we now know how homochirality – when only one mirror image is formed – can emerge and chemists have gained fundamental new tools for use in their daily work. Their discoveries have contributed to solving one of chemistry’s greatest mysteries: how homochirality – like that found in all living beings – can be created. One week ago, Kenso Soai shared the 2026 chemistry prize "for the discovery of non-linear effects and autocatalysis in asymmetric organic synthesis." Air conditioning keeps us cool, but it also heats the planet. As temperatures rise, demand for cooling is set to triple by 2050. But keeping cool doesn’t always mean cranking up the AC. From shade & ventilation to cool roofs, here are 5 ways to beat the heat with less energy: bit.ly/4zexrmn

Curiosity often sparks scientific breakthroughs. For 2026 medicine laureate Peter Hegemann, it began with a question: how could a tiny green alga called Chlamydomonas react so rapidly to light? The Chlamydomonas algae is famous for its ability to swim towards light. When the alga is stirred into a petri dish, the liquid turns a faint green colour. If one side of the dish is illuminated, the green colour moves towards the light source, as the microscopic algae swim towards it. The algae sense the light with an eyespot, a dot on the cell’s surface that contains a light-capturing molecule, retinal. Hegemann discovered electrical signals in the light-sensitive eyespot that occurred just half a millisecond after illumination, far faster than the response of the human eye. He could only think of one explanation for this ultrafast response: the process must be much simpler than in a human eye. He proposed that a single protein could both detect light and act as an ion channel, an idea initially met with scepticism. After years of experiments with his colleague Georg Nagel, Hegemann's hypothesis proved to be correct. Together, they discovered proteins that functioned exactly as he had predicted: ion channels that opened in response to light. This breakthrough laid the foundation for optogenetics, a revolutionary technique that allows scientists to control individual nerve cells with light. What began as a question about a microscopic alga ultimately helped transform the field of neuroscience. Read more about the newly awarded 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine: bit.ly/4jNd5w7

A 155-digit chain built from descending runs is prime. The spiral marks integers by residue class modulo 4, the same arithmetic that governs which of these runs can avoid small factors. Patterns like this are how large primes are hunted for cryptography: structure guides the search, then a proof removes the doubt.

Grow Tons of Tomatoes in Plastic Bottles! Discover this amazing space-saving tomato gardening idea! Large plastic bottles are transformed into long DIY planters, allowing you to grow multiple healthy tomato plants even in a small backyard, balcony, or patio. Cut suitable food-safe plastic containers, create proper drainage holes, and fill them with a rich, well-draining soil mix. Plant strong tomato seedlings and provide sturdy wooden stakes or supports as the plants grow. Place the planters where the tomatoes can receive plenty of direct sunlight. Water regularly when the top layer of soil begins to dry, but avoid waterlogging. Add compost or a balanced fertilizer during the growing season to support healthy growth and fruit production. With proper sunlight, watering, nutrition, and support, these simple recycled containers can produce an impressive harvest of fresh, juicy tomatoes! #TomatoGrowing #ContainerGardening #gardeningtips

In 1986 a guy got kicked out of every casino in Vegas for counting cards. So he flew to Hong Kong with $180,000 and started betting on horses instead. He walked away with almost $900 million. It's Bill Benter. He figured horse racing was just another counting problem. Same math, more moving parts. He and a partner showed up with $180k and a computer. Benter spent years teaching that computer to guess one thing, the real chance each horse had to win. If his number was better than the odds the bookies gave, he bet. If not, he skipped it. That's the whole trick. Expected value. EV = p · b − (1 − p) Only bet when your win chance p, at odds b, is worth more than your chance of losing. This recording was never meant to be some hidden gem. Nobody expected Professor Tsitsiklis to hand the whole foundation away in 45 minutes, but that's exactly what happens on the board. Students in that room pay over $80,000 a year to sit through it. It's free right here. It's free right here. Every quant, every professional bettor, every hedge fund analyst started with this exact hour. Benter just watched it and actually did the homework. Almost nobody knows this lecture even exists. Watch it before it gets taken down. The answer is in this video.

Ever get lost in all those mathematical “spaces”? This beautiful diagram maps the full hierarchy from the wildest to the most familiar. Topological spaces are defined only by open sets. Metric spaces add distance. Vector spaces allow linear combinations. Normed spaces measure size while inner product spaces add angles. At the core sits Euclidean R^n, the complete geometry of our everyday world.

🇩🇪 It is now certain: noyb will file an injunction against the German credit information agency #SCHUFA. Previously, investigations revealed that the agency stores millions of data records that should have been deleted long ago. Up to 69 million people could be affected.
