Speech BCIs are moving from proof of concept toward something people can live with outside the lab. A recent article from @ScienceNews traces the field from the first decoded words to fully implantable systems now in clinical study, including the investigational Connexus® BCI. That's me. 72 hours of Neuralink engineers in my living room. Best part? Cheryl and I joked on the phone again. ALS sucks, my life doesn't. 🧡
BREAKING: Neuralink has added a new blog update on its website. It details a 72-hour sprint to help people with ALS speak, make calls and use Grok with their thoughts. Engineers worked at a VOICE trial participant’s home, building and testing improvements alongside him. 🧠 SPEECH AND AI • Automatic speech detection: Recognizes when users try to speak, reducing button presses. • Live brain activity: Shows which imagined speaking patterns produce stronger signals. • Grok agent prototype: Think “Hey Neuralink” followed by a task, and Grok carries it out on a computer. 📱 BLOOM MOBILE APP • Everyday use: Tested outside the lab, including ordering coffee. • iPhone keyboard: Write in any app using speech decoded from brain signals. • Faster editing: Easier corrections and keyboard suggestions. • Lock-screen controls: Start speech without unlocking the phone. • Phone calls: Send generated speech directly into calls, with an optional greeting explaining the assistive device. 🤝 BUILT WITH THE PARTICIPANT • He, his wife and caregiver helped shape improvements. • Direct feedback shortened development cycles from weeks to hours. • He and his wife joked together on the phone again. 🧠 CONTINUING DEVELOPMENT • Some demos include improvements made after the sprint. • Neuralink is recruiting engineers. • Devices remain investigational. Neuralink is changing lives ♥️

Our second product is called Blindsight and it will, as the name suggests, enable even those who are completely blind or have never seen to see. It is ready from an engineering standpoint. Just waiting on regulatory approval.
Neuralink’s first product is called Telepathy. It enables high-speed communication with computers or humans simply by thinking. Output bandwidth will vastly exceed the fastest human speech or typing in a few years. Read that sentence again.

With the edit feature in the Bloom speech app, I can make the occasional correction quick and easy. 🎤🚀
This is an extremely promising result from Neuralink: Early data from their VOICE speech restoration study shows a participant achieving 75 words per minute (WPM) on a 125,000 word vocabulary. For comparison, the average adult US citizen talks at around 150 WPM on a 40,000 word vocabulary. With future trial participants, Neuralink will leverage their scale to get more data about how the brain produces speech. In turn, this will improve this result enough to surpass able-bodied humans! Consider how meaningful this is- if Neuralink patients can output information from their brain faster than non-Neuralinked patients, they'll have a huge technology advantage. But they also mention a 5.8% word error rate (WER). This is an error every ~17 words. I asked Grok to give us a sense of how good/ bad this is: "In practical terms: - Under ~5–6% is generally considered excellent / high-quality performance (comparable to strong modern automatic speech recognition systems on clean audio). - It is highly usable for communication—listeners or readers can usually follow the meaning with only occasional corrections. - On a large 125k-word vocabulary this is especially notable, as bigger vocabularies normally make accuracy harder." More information about the study can be found in this thread:

Wonderful news for ALS sufferers! We are also mere moments away from users being able to speak faster with this tech than non-patients.
Early Neuralink speech restoration data: We are enabling speech to text and voice at conversational rates in participants with ALS. One participant achieved 75 WPM at 5.8% WER on a 125k-word vocabulary in their first week.

On this day, one year ago- October 27, 2025: Neuralink announced their first participant in the United Kingdom. Paul, who lives with motor neuron disease, received his implant at University College London Hospitals and was moving a computer cursor with his thoughts the day after surgery. "It was remarkable to see Paul using his brain-computer interface on the very first day after surgery," said UCLH neurosurgeon @WRMuirhead. One year later, Neuralink has implanted around 27+ participants worldwide.
🇬🇧 We’re excited to announce our first participant in the UK! Paul, who is paralyzed due to motor neuron disease, received his Neuralink implant at @uclh earlier this month and was able to control a computer with his thoughts just hours after surgery.

Neurotech is Humanity’s Next Frontier! I’ve been investing in neurotech since 2021 and working with teams building BCIs, NeuroAI, and connectomics. It now feels like AI did in ~2019. We are entering an extraordinary era: neurotech already restores functions, it can enhance our capabilities, and will evolve what it means to be human. PLC Neurotech is the fund backing the extraordinary founders and defining companies of this booming industry.

Nick Wray, the 8th person in the world with a Neuralink implant has passed away due to ALS. For the time I knew him, he carried an optimistic energy that helped pick others up. One of his go-to sayings was: "Be good, do good. 😎" In support of his family and friends, we can all choose to live by that message every day. More information can be found in the link in Audrey's post:

NEURALINK: It appears Neuralink through X Holdings via DV Property Venture LLC has acquired more land for the Neuralink campus in Del Valle, Texas. DV Property Venture LLC is listed at 2110 Ranch Road 620 S, Lakeway, TX. It is the same address used for the 2022 SEC filings for the Twitter acquisition. Not only that but the same fencing, same private property signs, and same mobile security camera systems are being used at both plots of land. The DV plot is 100 acres just northeast of the main campus' 111 acres. The land separating the two is a privately owned tree farm.

It is really wonderful that the era of Artificial Intelligence and the era of brain-computer interfaces are both developing at the same time. More of this.
Today, Baroness Campbell of Surbiton delivered a speech in the @UKHouseofLords using an AI recreation of her voice, built by ElevenLabs. A first for the UK Parliament. Baroness Campbell has spinal muscular atrophy, which affects her speech. The Baroness has now created an AI voice that replicates the tone, rhythm, and pitch of her original voice. Our technology has now been used to restore the voices of more than 11,000 people who have lost their voices through injury or illness, and we’ve committed to help one million people living with voice loss around the world.
