When the Lord afflicts, it is with great tenderness and compassion.
When he afflicts, it is not willingly, that is, not from any injustice or cruelty in his nature; no, infinitely far from it.
Afflictions proceed from his goodness; and they are ordered by perfect wisdom and the greatest tenderness.
Remember, my good friend, he spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all!

My 7-year-old son can’t watch sports with me anymore. Not because of the games, but because of the commercials.
The horror movie trailers are the worst. The terrifying imagery can send him into a spiral of anxiety that lasts well beyond the 30-second ad. These are images his young mind simply isn’t ready to process.
We talk a lot about mental health in this country, especially in sports. Yet between the relentless gambling ads, alcohol promotions and genuinely disturbing horror trailers, I’ve reached a point where watching an MLB or NFL game with my kids requires me to monitor every commercial break.
I love sports. I work in sports. Some of my favorite childhood memories were made watching games with my family. I want that for my sons.
I wish we could exercise better judgment about what we’re putting in front of families during sporting events.
Sports should bring generations together. Instead, I’m increasingly forced to treat game day like an adults-only event.
Something feels very wrong about that.

Allowing the problem of evil to become the controlling question puts God, rather than sinners, on trial for the evil and suffering of the world. Soteriology becomes inverted. - Charles Helmer

I'm leaving @tgc national conference with a tired body, a full heart, and a churning mind thinking about the gospel, the church, and how we can better minister to East Nashville.
Below is one takeaway from each session I attended.

The essence of the Christian religion consists in this, that the creation of the Father, ruined by sin, is restored in the death of the Son of God, and re-created by the grace of the Holy Spirit into a kingdom of God. – at Brent, London
