Chart of the Day 🤓
By popular demand, here's one of UK exports both of goods and of services, and to both the EU and the rest of the world... 🤔
Three quick takeaways:
1⃣ exports of services are more important than exports of goods - and have continued to grow rapidly
2⃣ exports of goods to the EU have fallen slightly in volume terms since 2019, but they had barely grown for many years - even when the UK was in the EU
3⃣ exports of goods to the rest of the world have also been relatively weak since 2019 - so any problems on the goods side cannot just be due to Brexit

I remember when the #DublinConvention was signed. It was loaded against asylum returns to France from the start - and remained so until we left. @Nigel_Farage is right. Suggestions from @andyburnham that the boats started because of #Brexit are for the birds.

What an actual genocide looks like, btw.
Anyway, time for some context about the so-called 'Nakba' that is, always, conveniently left out:
During the 6 million person drop shown here, the leaders of the Arabs in the British mandate for Palestine sided with the Nazis. Immediately after the Nazis killed 6 million Jews, the Arabs launched a war. The aim of the war was to destroy the Jewish state that took in those Jews who'd survived and fled for safety to the Jewish homeland, despite the fact that those Jews openly offered to split the land and accept peace.
The Arabs humiliatingly lost, then ethnically cleansed their countries of all Jews in a fit of racist fury. During that war, that they started, under 1 million Arabs left the Jewish state. All of this gets boiled down to a fake victim narrative in which the true victims of all of this were the Arabs, who as a result of their genocidal efforts to kill and conquer the surviving Jews, lost their homes in the region their neighbouring Arab states invaded. They were forced to move a few miles down the road, to countries with populations that were culturally almost identical, and spoke the same language. That's the supposed 'Nakba' that, we are still told almost 8 decades later, invalidates the entirety of Israel's existence.

The choice to rename Arab Israelis as “Israeli Palestinians” does not reflect how they actually identify. Only 13% of Arab Israelis consider ‘Palestine’ as important to their identity. Most focus on being Arab and Israeli. Western media erase that and it’s gross.

The EU's budget for 2014-20 was €960Bn. While we were EU members.
For 2021-27 was originally set at €1.074Tn but jumped to €2.018Tn thru Covid, Ukraine and other stuff. Funded from borrowing
The EU is now talking about ~€2Tn for 2027-34!
Yet Rejoiners use the 2020 figure

...and to add insult to injury, none of this would have happened if France hadn't voted to leave the EU.
Oh sorry, wait a minute. [checks notes]
The sickest man of Europe is still in the EU?
France has long been seen as the EU’s “spoiled child,” said former Italian PM Mario Monti.
Now, the bloc’s second-biggest economy is being dragged into a vicious cycle of twin fiscal and social crises that are fueling each other.

Eric Hoffer wrote this article about Israel almost 60 years go. It reads like it was written yesterday.
"The Jews are a peculiar people: things permitted to other nations are forbidden to the Jews.
Other nations drive out thousands, even millions of people and there is no refugee problem. Russia did it, Poland and Czechoslovakia did it, Turkey threw out a million Greeks, and Algeria a million Frenchmen. Indonesia threw out heaven knows how many Chinese-and no one says a word about refugees. But in the case of Israel the displaced Arabs have become eternal refugees. Everyone insists that Israel must take back every single Arab. Arnold Toynbee calls the displacement of the Arabs an atrocity greater than any committed by the Nazis.
Other nations when victorious on the battlefield dictate peace terms. But when Israel is victorious it must sue for peace. Everyone expects the Jews to be the only real Christians in this world.
Other nations when they are defeated survive and recover but should Israel be defeated it would be destroyed. Had Nasser triumphed last June he would have wiped Israel off the map, and no one would have lifted a finger to save the Jews.
No commitment to the Jews by any government, including our own, is worth the paper it is written on. There is a cry of outrage all over the world when people die in Vietnam or when two Negroes are executed in Rhodesia. But when Hitler slaughtered Jews no one remonstrated with him.
The Swedes, who are ready to break of diplomatic relations with America because of what we do in Vietnam, did not let out a peep when Hitler was slaughtering Jews. They sent Hitler choice iron ore, and ball bearings, and serviced his troop trains to Norway.
The Jews are alone in the world. If Israel survives, it will be solely because of Jewish efforts. And Jewish resources. Yet at this moment Israel is our only reliable and unconditional ally. We can rely more on Israel than Israel can rely on us. And one has only to imagine what would have happened last summer had the Arabs and their Russian backers won the war to realize how vital the survival of Israel is to America and the West in general.
I have a premonition that will not leave me; as it goes with Israel so will it go with all of us. Should Israel perish the holocaust will be upon us."

Wrong; under free movement, EU citizens were able to come and live in the UK without getting a job or doing any work at all.

‘Money coming back’ to the UK was just some of our own contributions being spent here on EU priorities!
We were a massive net contributor to the EU budget, to the tune of many billions a year.
Trade includes services, and is well up since Brexit.
Peter Matza retweeted
But services are the vast majority of our exports!
Which is why our overall exports are up.
Which is why Rayner was wrong to say our exports are down.
And why she should have been challenged or at least questioned.
Will the @BBC now issue an important correction for viewers?

Why are you just picking on food, when our overall exports to the EU are well up since Brexit?
We’ve also got trade deals the EU didn’t have when we were members, such as with CPTPP and India (and we’ve had lower tariffs with the USA than the EU have had since we left.)

Genuine question: can anyone please explain what’s supposed to be so wrong about our EU relationship?
We still have a free trade deal with them & are free to strike free trade deals globally now.
But we don’t have to accept free movement of people nor pay them billions in fees.

I’ve written many times about how the soft left on Labour’s backbenches are ‘economic illiterates’. This is proof positive. Beyond redemption in its misunderstanding of markets, supply, demand, taxes.
Nope, that’s not how taxes and price works. The price is determined by demand and supply.
Companies charge the highest price they can given demand. A tax levied on *profits* does not affect a company’s cost ie supply.
Taxes on *windfall* profits (like oil and gas) are the most efficient kind of tax there is.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Corporate profit taxes do not directly shift marginal costs but empirical studies show partial pass-through into higher consumer prices. Windfall taxes on oil and gas have deterred investment and production in practice despite theoretical efficiency on rents.

Long time followers will remember that, back in May 2025 the organizer of the Rejoin March, Peter Corr, said he was going to debunk my book of 75 Brexit Benefits and then release his own book of the debunks.
Well he didn't manage to debunk any, and has now deleted the website 🤣

Two points in assessing net economic impact of Brexit:
1. it is highly uncertain given everything else going on.
2. whether a cost or benefit, the effect is certainly modest.
With those caveats, my judgement is the net economic effect of Brexit so far has been positive.

Reasonable to argue Brexit had a small net economic cost or benefit.
Suggesting it's been an unparalleled economic disaster like he does here, is not only wrong but grossly irresponsible.
