Hurrah! Hurrah! We bring the jubilee!
Hurrah! Hurrah! The flag that makes you free!
So we sang the chorus from Atlanta to the sea!
While we were marching through Georgia!
In a more religious age we’d have seen this, rightfully, as God sending us a message.

During his time as governor of NY, William Seward lauded the efforts of three freedmen who had attempted to bring a slave out of bondage as “humane” and “praiseworthy”.
He was labelled a “bigoted New England fanatic” by Democratic “papers”.
I hope to earn a similar moniker!

This account is pro-property tax. It has been a mainstay of the Anglo-American tradition since William the Conqueror. Property taxes are a local method to collect taxes, & provide for local services that benefit the community writ-large.
If you are a property owner, pay it.
For a Congressman to see his branch, the branch charged with the most authority, trampled by the Executive with such glee is disgusting.
A disease ridden, incontinent, rat would be a more fitting Congressman as it at least would have the decency not to pretend it wasn’t a rat.
I was one of only 7 republicans to vote against the short-sighted Lindsay Graham sanctions bill. Glad to see Trump has used the executive authority granted to him by Congress to waive almost all of the provisions of this stupid law that pertain to Russia.

Reading about Salmon Chase and I think he’d be a hit among Zoomers.
Anytime he succeeded in anything he immediately thought that he’d failed because he could’ve done better.
That’s a type of self loathing that seems to resonate today.

In Anglo-American law, we have this concept called “property.” It means that for land you own—“your property”—you get to freely occupy it, alter it, benefit from its use, and exclude others from it. You can grant other people rights to use it on a temporary basis by contract.
This is, at bottom, a pretty good system for managing land. It aligns incentives pretty well and leads to broad land improvements and greater prosperity overall. The government exercises reasonable limits on how one may use their property (especially if it impinges on other people’s use of their own property) but ideally these public regulations should be pretty light.
The best thing about property is clarity of title. If it’s clear who owns some property, and who possesses what rights with respect to that property, then everyone can behave rationally. When it’s not clear who owns property, all sorts of problems emerge. Basically the downfall of civilization is lack of clarity of title. Both public and private efforts to clarify title are per se virtuous, and anyone who seeks to systematically muddy title is, in my view, essentially evil.
