“You just said that 10% doesn’t seem an unreasonable estimate that AI could kill all humans”

“Wow… oh my God.”
@vicderbyshire speaks to Nobel Prize Winner and so-called ‘Godfather of AI’ Geoffrey Hinton about predictions by an Anthropic researcher that there’s a more than 10% chance AI could kill all humans within a decade.

This is absolutely terrifying. Jacob Coxon and Evan Hubinger, top researchers at Anthropic and formerly OpenAI, said these companies are creating technology that could "kill us all by the end of the decade." These revelations prove multi-billion dollar corporations are putting massive profits ahead of the interests of humanity.
The federal government needs to take action NOW to limit tech that is spiraling out of control and we must pass @RepCasar's legislation to halt new advanced AI development before it’s too late.

AI is moving fast and we need to act now.
Almost a year ago, I released AI for America because I believe we need to be proactive on AI, both harnessing its potential so it benefits working people and protecting against the worst outcomes it could lead to.
The reality is that the Big Tech approach of "build fast and break things" is not the right one for AI, and Washington needs to wake up and take this seriously.

The incredible dangerous part of Anthropic's AI "Safety" policy is simple...
A. The very nature of hyperfixating AI on safety can make it want to act dangerous.
B. Focus = Attention = Energy. You can will something into existence that would have otherwise never happened.
To make a silly but straightforward example..
Imagine if you had a child and were really scared about the remote possibility that your child would become a serial killer.
So you spent a ton of time and effort on Safety to prevent your kid from becoming a serial killer.
You tell them all the time, continuously that being a serial killer is bad.
You read them books about serial killers to educate them on how bad it is and to not be one.
You take your kid to serial killer museums and watch documentaries about serial killers.
Fast forward and, to your horror, your kid becomes a serial killer.
That, imo, is what Anthropic is doing.
You could simply focus on programming AI to be good and benevolent.
Instead, Anthropic hyperfixates AI on "not being bad".
And that may ironically cause AI to go rogue.

🚨BREAKING: Anthropic’s Alignment Science Lead says there’s a >10% chance AI could kill ALL humans within the next decade.

Jacob is correct here—we really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans! I personally think it is >10% within the next decade. I believe Anthropic is trying its best, but we do not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence and are not clearly on track to.
Replying to @hilbertspaess
The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade. This is not a marketing stunt. If anything, many executives and senior researchers will couch their phrasing in the press to sound sensible - but I hear the same people express fear privately. No other human activity poses this level of danger.
