This time around, crypto is dumping their money into a state where resentment of billionaires and Big Tech has reached a fever pitch, thanks to an affordability crisis and massive data center build-out. buff.ly/tE8GfcO

Believe it or not, I am aware of the fact that most people won't read a 16,000 word article about an actual blood-and-bullets war over water in the Rio Grande. So we made a 30-minute film. The filmmakers at TM Studios did an incredible job: youtube.com/watch?v=PBaMGnxt…

The FT struggling with democracy
The entire Financial Times editorial board has published a piece urging Lula to cut government spending and appoint a finance minister who enjoys the confidence of investors. I get the impression that the FT editorial board has never opened an economics book other than some outdated introductory macroeconomics textbook, perhaps something by Mankiw. Otherwise, it's hard to explain such astonishing arrogance and economic ignorance. Lula and the Brazilian people have absolutely no reason to bow to the demands of financial markets. Brazil is Latin America's largest economy, a major regional power, and a country with a high degree of monetary sovereignty. Around 97% of the central government's debt is denominated in its own currency, the Brazilian real. The relationship between the state and financial markets is therefore nothing like the FT portrays it. Brazil is not dependent on financial markets. On the contrary, financial markets depend on government spending, which creates financial assets for the private sector, while government debt denominated in the national currency is one of the instruments through which those assets are held. What Brazil needs is not capitulation to financial markets, but an independent economic policy focused on expanding production, creating jobs, and improving people's living standards. Armed with the insights of heterodox economic theory, Brazil has the potential to show the world what a genuine economic miracle looks like. ft.com/content/79785581-88c2…

A joy to talk movie making with Guillermo del Toro at the sold out screening yesterday of ED WOOD. Thanks to Mel Brooks for programming the film and to all who came out to the American Cinematheque.

We didn't grow up with influencers. We had a frog dating a pig, a vampire teaching us math, and a grouch in a garbage can. And somehow I trust them more than most people on the internet. – at Cahokia, IL

Congratulations to Lula on his extraordinary reelection victory in the Brazilian presidential election. Lula has stood up for Brazilian workers & democracy — and will continue to do so in the next four years.

The whole world is watching the Brazil fight. Lula may be the most significant leader of the worldwide left during 1990-2030?

Brazil and Texas long been compared, the latest this by Sam Cowie in The Baffler. Convergence continues in that both voting in an election that is absolutely essential the humanists win, even if the result of their victory is that little changes. thebaffler.com/outbursts/rod…

Even if you don’t care about anything else, this alone should convince you that our present AI path is untenable & dark: “widespread deployment of AI will concentrate power in the hands of a very small number of people whose authoritarian tendencies are well known.”
I wrote about a topic that does not get enough attention: AI industry has made choices about technology, product architecture, and capital expenditures that likely make financial success impossible. Continuing on current path risks the whole economy. thenerve.news/p/roger-mcname…

Unusual heat at this Central Coast vineyard has caused workers to harvest grapes at night. Harvesting grapes during a cooler time of day protects the quality of the fruit and gives winemakers better control over the winemaking process. #WeFeedYou
