ActionAid Association conducted a one-day training on Child Rights and Children’s Grama Sabha for 31 Panchayat Development Officers in Chikkodi taluk, Karnataka. The initiative also oriented 20 volunteers to take the child rights campaign forward in villages. The initiative aims to directly engage 2,100 children across 13 Gram Panchayats in 20 villages, with another 1,650 children expected to be reached indirectly through awareness and outreach activities. International Day of the Girl Child | 11 October 2026 Every girl has the right to be welcomed, nourished, cared for, educated and heard. She must get the time to play, freedom to explore and the joy of a childhood in which she can grow into a healthy, confident and socially aware individual. Yet patriarchy creates disadvantage from the cradle to the grave—and discrimination can begin even before birth. Son preference threatens girls’ right to be born. Unequal access to nutrition, healthcare and education undermines their development. Household duties, restrictions on movement, violence and child marriage can take away their opportunities to learn, play and choose their futures. These inequalities can continue through adulthood and old age. On this International Day of the Girl Child, let us commit to changing the structures and values that sustain this injustice: in families, communities, schools, workplaces and public institutions. That means challenging son preference, sharing care and household work equally, ensuring accessible healthcare and quality education, creating safe spaces for play, and defending girls’ freedom to speak, participate and make decisions. Boys and men must share responsibility for this change. Girls today to have rights realised in their everyday lives, as children and as individuals. Their worth does not depend on the roles they may fulfil for others.
