Since Colombia's far-right govt took office on 7 August 2026, there has been a rise in:
- killings of former FARC members in the peace process
- killings of women activists
- stigmatisation of victims of state violence
- repression of peaceful protest
- military operations that have killed civilians, including children
Here is JFC's monthly human rights update for October 2026.

I have thankfully never known much about @Dove_House before this week but sadly, now I do. I just want to say what a wonderful place it is, with the most wonderful people working and volunteering there. If you are ever asked for donations, please put a few quid in. Its a God send

Benefits have already faced massive cuts. They cut disability benefits by 50% and froze them from rising with inflation for 4 years. That's two huge cuts.

Prof Arday was cleared of plagiarism. The media hounded him to his death. It was not a public interest story until the media made it so. Attack on Prof Arday is grounded in deep seated anti-Blackness in the souls of those whose imaginaries of the Black man excludes certain roles.
Replying to @jgro_the
Recognition from fellow journalists is much appreciated as this is undoubtedly a difficult and polarising story, with a tragic outcome. Many people still do not accept its legitimacy but it was an important public interest story which sparked public debate about key issues of our age timeshighereducation.com/opi…

Basic human decency wouldn't permit me to be "very happy" if I was nominated for some trinket, knowing that it very needlessly costs someone their life.
When the story of Jason Arday is told in full and remembered in history, the British "Journalism" Awards will be ashamed.
Very happy to have been shortlisted in the Specialist Journalism category in this year's British Journalism Awards for my investigation into Cambridge University professor Jason Arday and the extensive plagiarism in his PhD thesis #BJA2026

Regardless of which war criminal becomes prime minister, Palestinians living under Israeli apartheid will continue to face genocide, land theft, and erasure.
We cannot accept lies, excuses, or half-measures from our leaders. We must impose a full arms embargo and sanctions until Palestine is free.

Housing benefit has been frozen since April 2024 while private rents rise, leaving many struggling to afford a home.
Housing benefit must be unfrozen to prevent more people becoming homeless.
Thank you to @abenaopp for raising this at Parliament yesterday ahead of the budget.
Pleased to join today’s Rough Sleeping Summit at @10DowningStreet and welcome the new investment announced to end rough sleeping.
As HCLG Committee Chair, I pressed the Minister on our inquiry’s recommendations and the risk that the continued LHA freeze will worsen homelessness.

I have been called anti-Semitic and ableist slurs, compared to a serial killer, and people online have said my address should be leaked. If you were ever wondering what it's like to be a left wing woman in politics just trying to hold the government to account.

El Fasher: One year later, RSF continues detentions, torture of civilians in El Fasher
Ayin had the opportunity to interview Amnesty’s lead researcher for their latest report, Laurie Mills, regarding their findings. “The horror really didn’t stop in October 2025 for many people,” Mills said. “The world saw the images of massacres and the terrible things that did happen when the city was captured by the RSF, but for many people, these horrific things have continued, particularly for those who remained in the city.” Residents who recently fled the city told Amnesty International that schools had been converted into detention facilities, that their movements were carefully restricted, and that unlawful killings were common. According to estimates acquired by humanitarian organisations working in the city, El Fasher now has fewer than 70,000 people, compared to a pre-war population of almost one million. Humanitarian access remains restricted, and humanitarian personnel and residents in the city are continually watched or monitored. Arbitrary detention continues to pose significant hazards to both civilians and humanitarian workers.

Our unhoused neighbors are facing a wave of violence nationwide.
These attacks cannot be separated from the criminalization and dehumanization perpetuated by this Administration and enabled by the Supreme Court. It must stop.

In the coffee corner of the shared office where I work, dark humour broke out over the looming threat of starvation in Gaza as bakeries face imminent closure.
While I waited for the water to boil for my coffee, young freelancers joked with the office assistant as they ordered their breakfast sandwiches.
“I suppose this is the last day we get sandwiches,” one young man said.
“Will you start making us lentils from now on?” another asked, invoking the dish that had been almost all we ate during the starvation.
“Will you start serving half-cups of water?” another joked, referring to the water scarcity that has worn people down over the past three years.
Dark humour has become part of daily life in Gaza where the long months of starvation have left people with memories that immediately return at the sight of the first bread queue or the news that another bakery may close.
