He ran from one end of his kennel to the other, following the family as far as the bars would let him. He watched the little girl smile. He watched the door open. He even took a few excited steps, certain this was the day his lonely nights were finally over. Then they kept walking. The door closed. The hallway became quiet. And for the first time all day… he stopped wagging. He stood there staring at the door, waiting for it to open again. It never did. Some heartbreak doesn’t come from losing something… It comes from believing, even for just a moment, that you had finally been chosen.
