I wanna be clear that the problem with the selfie trend is not that it’s somehow inherently bad for people to post their bodies or be proud of their bodies. Being happy with your body is good, I’m very happy for you if that is how you feel. The problem is only that it’s being done to “disprove” that they are fat & (by implication) less valuable. This creates an implied dichotomy that thin or fit= hot/good & fat= ugly/bad. Because if what was said about us being fat were true the implication is that it would be insulting to be called fat. But firstly, size does not determine how attractive someone is & moreover physical appearance does not determine intrinsic worth. All people are equally valuable regardless of whether they are attractive or not. This is something that takes a long time to unlearn & I don’t want people to feel embarrassed or ashamed if this did not occur to them. I don’t think people are doing this intentionally, I think some people have blindspots that make them more susceptible to making this unintentional conflation, & I want to be so delicate about this because body image is a deeply personal, very sensitive thing for many people regardless their size or body shape. I don’t want you feel bad if you did this, just want to take the opportunity to explain why people are reacting negatively to it. No hate just something to consider.
