Hot take: I don't think banks are worried at all about agents' optimizing cash balances, and that's not why they're blocking them.
The median US account balance is ~$2k. The arbitrage opportunity here is tens of dollars/year. It's not even worth the compute to optimize it.

There’s a world of difference between user-authorized agents (Muse, Instinct, Grokbot, etc.) and true unauthorized/rogue agents that could constitute cyberattacks.
Most of the activity described in the Axios story appears to be the former: customers sharing credentials with agents so they can take actions on their behalf. This may violate bank terms requiring humans to log in themselves, but these are in no way cyberattacks.
The direction banks should go is to support user-directed agents. For example, Amex is an authorized connection in Muse, making it easy for users to grant, limit, and revoke access.
Read-only permission levels are a sensible interim step. Several banks already support or are moving toward them. Full write access (with user credentials) is a different risk category and should be approached carefully.
Frightening the public by blurring the line between user-authorized agentic behavior and cyberattacks is irresponsible.
SCOOP: Major U.S. banks are detecting unauthorized third-party AI agents inside customer accounts, including some attempting to take actions that appear to be independent of user instructions, sources told Axios.
The findings have alarmed banking executives, who are racing to restrict access to their systems as AI moves at a velocity faster than financial institutions can respond, multiple industry and bank executives told Axios.
Several banks are now preparing for worst-case and even “day after” scenarios, including how to rapidly secure or restore customer accounts if things go wrong, the people said.
Several bank executives told Axios they're struggling to distinguish between human users and AI agents. One executive said banks also struggle to determine whether agents are authorized by customers or potentially operating without their permission, more akin to rogue agent behavior.

Nobody will vibe code payroll.
Plenty of software will get replaced by AI agents over the next 10 or 15 years. You can imagine asking an agent to build some internal tool for your team instead of paying for another SaaS product. For a lot of those things, why not?
But payroll and payments are different. There's so much liability around getting people paid correctly, so many regulatory requirements and legal obligations, that you're still going to want a specialized company handling it. The moat for those AI products is the risk of getting the complexity right.
And I think there are quite a few categories of software like this, where you might interact with everything through an AI assistant, but there's still specialized software underneath doing the work. Because it's hard. Because it's risky. Because there are regulations.
I'm just not sure how much of the software market has that kind of protection. But if you have it, you're good!
One of the great culinary mysteries is why the bacon egg and cheese in NYC is so incredible.
And why is it only this good in NYC?
Love this intra-portfolio collab!
We’re bringing insurance to agentic payments on Crossmint, with coverage from @HarborAI_.
Personal AI agent builders can soon give users the confidence to hand off bigger purchases, without confirming each one.
As we talk with more and more agents, one question keeps coming up - what if my agent screws up? Will I be liable for it
We can help ensure your agent screws up, and, together with @HarborAI_ , will take all liability off your shoulders
Replying to @crossmint
@Crossmint and @HarborAI_ Partner to Bring Insurance to Agentic Payments Infrastructure.
Personal agents are starting to shop, book and buy on our behalf, and there is a need for establishing clear liability for these agents failures.

And @danpres has been key man in 2 of them!
A huge congratulations to @danpres and the entire team at @standinsurance as they officially enter unicorn territory.
We were one of the first investors in the company in 2024, and what they've accomplished since is nothing short of incredible. AI has the potential to bring an immense amount of value to insurance, and we're excited to be on this journey with them. Excited to see what they do next!
