A puzzling thing about all this grocery uproar: - Roughly 6-8% of the median US household's income is spent on groceries, so like $4000 a year - Even if applied to literally all groceries a person buys, a 15% discount is like $600 a year, which honestly is... kind of pathetic?
New York City will require IDs to prove you live in the city in order to shop in the city owned grocery stores. So you need an ID to shop in the city’s stores, but it would be racist to require an ID to vote. Perfection.

you can also remove the W entirely and also get your answer
Me realizing that if you replace the "W" in "What", "Where", "When" with a "T" you will answer the questions

this is a 1996 guide on how to help someone use a computer. it’s strikingly resonant with ‘how to be a parent’, or really ‘how to help anyone with anything’. a nice example of “the universal within the particular”

i grew up outside a large city. around thirteen, i became vegan (sorry). when i told people around me that cows make milk after becoming pregnant, like humans, everyone told me i was very stupid and misinformed. they all thought there was zero analogy - cows just made milk.

you ever noticed, when hearing about the death of someone, that often they were in their ‘death bed’. Why would you even buy such a thing? That’s just asking for it. If anyone buys me a death bed, I hope you kept the receipt, because it’s going right back to the shop!

It turns out that sparkling water and raisins are *fascinating*. My daughter and I happened upon this effect playing together in the kitchen a long time ago, and I couldn't help but explore the system more deeply... 1/n arxiv.org/abs/2308.12927

I've never had so many "this can't possibly be true, we must have a bug" results in the course of a research project before. I'd like to take a moment to walk through some of the very strange (and surprisingly beautiful) things we found.
Neural networks often pack many unrelated concepts into a single neuron – a puzzling phenomenon known as 'polysemanticity' which makes interpretability much more challenging. In our latest work, we build toy models where the origins of polysemanticity can be fully understood.

I dislike "everyone is beautiful" or "you're beautiful just the way you are" - this pressure that if you're unattractive, you should 'pretend' that you're beautiful. This privileges attractive people and expects the unattractive to pretend that they don't have any disadvantage.

When I had just started my job at @NYU_CNS @NYUPsych in 2013, I pitched a project to incoming graduate students. It was a wild new direction for me: using board games to understand how people think ahead. 7.5 years later, we have a preprint. psyarxiv.com/rhq5j/ 1/

I really admire people who are able to make accessible introductions to technical subjects in the form of twitter threads. I'll give it a shot myself, even though I can count on one hand the number of followers who would be interested. Today's topic: What is a Kalman filter? 1/

In calc when teaching the 'min surface area of a can with given vol, of which soln is diameter = ht, I wrote a cat foot company telling them how much they'd save by making their cans taller. Got a letter from the marketing dept telling me a million reasons for the can's design.
