It's so funny how the market reacts to earning calls sometimes 😂 Anways as it keeps dropping I'll be adding more to my $GOOGL position.

In 2009, working at Yahoo, I oversaw Ad Marketplaces - which included management of the PPC advertising system. We had a terrible set of options. @Google had a better search engine, and was consistently eating our share of consumer search. The monetization load on Google search at that time was remarkably low - 1 ad per search max, often zero ads. Wall Street wanted revenue growth. Consumers wanted better search results. Advertisers wanted quality clicks. We chose Wall Street. There were times where we had so many ads on the page that zero organic search results showed above the fold. We sacrificed the search experience for revenue growth, in the face of a competitor whose experience was virtually un-monetized and clearly superior. We grew revenue from search at double digits rate, while share of search queries was steadily negative. There was another path, but the company lacked the fortitude to put the search experience and advertisers first. @Google @sundarpichai find themselves in a comparable situation today. @ChatGPT @claudeai @GeminiApp all provide better search experiences today with very light or zero ad load. And at the same time, @Google is making decisions that drive revenue growth at the expense of both the user experience AND the trust of advertisers - just at the moment where those constituents trust will be most important. Google was the company that always played the long game. In moments like these, we learn whether that’s because a monopoly on the best ad business ever built made it easy to do that, or if they’re really willing to make the hard tradeoffs that we weren’t at Yahoo back in 2009.

some of the best advice I’ve ever heard: optimize your tolerance for uncertainty because everything good you want in life comes from overcoming fear, tolerating boredom, and becoming comfortable with discomfort.

summary of my experience building with LLMs: - done does not equal good. - done does not equal great. - shipping faster doesn't mean better software. all of this has always been true. and it's still true.

The NSA is telling American companies to take production systems offline. The AI-era of cybersecurity has fully arrived.
Effective Immediately, all organizations using PHP for their systems are advised to be prepared for an update addressing two critical vulnerabilities. PHP is widely used for web applications. These vulnerabilities often provide a direct path to the server's file system or database. If an immediate update is not feasible, it is recommend that organizations take the system offline until it can be fully mitigated. NSA will follow up shortly with more specific guidance.

I see the protests in France are trending. Since I just spent 10 days there during the heart of them, I figured I'd chime in with what's actually going on. The news and clickbait accounts on X will show you the outlier events: burning buildings, raging violence and everything that triggers you. I was in the heart of Aix en Provence during the biggest protest day and filmed the center where it was happening. (See below) This is right the University, across from the church, dead center of town. The students are dancing, singing, kicking soccer balls and have comically barricaded the entrance doors to force the school to close. I visited many cities in France during the protest period, and saw zero violence or malpractice of any kind. More broadly, I spent more than a month this year in France across 3 trips and 10+ cities, including Paris, Bordeaux, Aix en Provence, Nice, Antibes, Biarritz, and others, and it's incredibly safe, charming, peaceful and beautiful. Every city I visited is nicer than almost every American city, and there's zero comparison. So much that it wouldn't even be insulting to France to try, because nobody who has spent significant time in both countries would take this comparison seriously. I spoke with the students at length about their views. I also spoke with waiters, drivers, merchants, staff and whoever. They were all civil, well articulated and genuinely wanted to see change. We can disagree about their reasoning, logic or whatever, and it's true that France has fiscal problems, but to chalk up the France protests to raging extremist violence from "pick your favorite group to blame", is a laughable misrepresentation of what's actually going on. If you exclusively watch the news and believe the top 1% extreme situations, you have likely been psyoped.

The day Elon musk passes, some bloke would then be strutting around as the "designer" behind the successful products of space x & Tesla. They’d go on to ride that wave, speak on panel sessions, start lecturing about the "beauty of design" and what not. Until they are given the chance to make a name for themselves without elon or Tesla and they’d go on to have the biggest fumble. You already know some examples of these folks.

this really resonated with me. I believe what you make should reflect what you deeply care about. as a software engineer, I think it's never been more important to deeply care about what you make - going beyond "it works". It requires thinking more like an artist.

We, software people, have a weird sense of entitlement! For years, we built software that automated others' work. Imagine what a New York driver might think about their life when they first see a Cybercab or an FSD-enabled Model Y. Similarly, imagine what a line worker at a German-car factory might think about their life when they first sees an industrial robot. We always expected people to deal with it and asked them to upskill. But we are convinced that our work is special. Writing software needs judgment and creativity that we uniquely possess. Now that most of what we do can be automated, the reality is starting to sink in. The answer, again, for us is: adapt!
