There are no requirements for any of Australia’s 38 public universities to make the minutes of their council meetings public. Neither university staff, students, nor the public have the right to know the decision-making processes of the councils that govern AU public universities

This absolutely applies to Australian universities!
University whistleblowers who have reported professional malpractice have found themselves bullied and isolated, with no support from colleagues or management. The process can drag on for years. Often, whistleblowers leave. A new university, a new job, early retirement on grounds of ill health — anything to escape an impossible situation. That is why stronger protections — and a culture that protects rather than punishes those who speak up — are so important. Misconduct allegations involving senior academics must be investigated by independent experts, rather than by the universities that employ those academics. nature.com/articles/d41586-0…

In Australia, protections for whistleblowers are very weak!!
Notice something wrong at your university? Perhaps you witness bullying of a colleague, data fabrication or a professor having an affair with an undergraduate student? You do what you're supposed to do You report it, right? nature.com/articles/d41586-0…

And the disgrace of course doesn’t know a bottom. Management of Uni Wollongong cannot prove what methods they used to make academics redundant and close whole programs. The numbers were again and again proven wrong. Management would not pass basic exams. tinyurl.com/mr25hma9

The never ending story of Australian universities. Redundancies, getting rid if staff in one or the other way while management is NEVER accountable and always blames some external forces. And the management keeps their fat checks while others suffer. tinyurl.com/58nm4t5u

An article in @insidehighered argues that universities may be helping to create the research integrity problems they are trying to solve. The argument is simple: if we judge academic success largely by publication counts, journal prestige and citations, we should not be surprised when people find ways to maximise those numbers. That can mean salami-slicing research, citation gaming, purchased authorship, paper mills and, increasingly, AI-assisted fraud. The authors suggest a different approach: assess fewer papers, but assess them properly; broaden our definition of impact; and pay much closer attention to suspicious citation practices. Perhaps the bigger question is this: Are research integrity problems really just problems with individual researchers, or are they also a predictable consequence of the systems universities have created to measure academic success? Strong piece about the NSW university governance inquiry. The report and its recommendations reveal a state of horrific incompetence in leadership of public universities. The fascinating report shows management and consultants destroying universities: michaelwest.com.au/universit…,

Oh, wow, the story of another Australian Vice Chancellor and his rapid rise backed by incompetence. Yes our country loves to reward the mediocre but surely the universities are leading! theharereport.substack.com/p…

The organisation formerly known as the "Australian Vice-Chancellors' Committee" is at it again. After multiple government inquiries and an ICAC investigation, they've concluded that "regulation" is the problem! 🙃 timeshighereducation.com/new… via @timeshighered
